THIS LITTLE GIRL'S STORY MOVED ME SO MUCH THAT I JUST HAD TO HAVE THE BOOK. SHE IS TRULY A REMARKABLE YOUNG LADY WHO IS LEAVING AN INCREDIBLE FOOT PRINT ON OUR SOULS. WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE. THIS IS A WONDERFUL TEACHING TOOL FOR CHILDREN AS WELL AS ADULTS.

Inspirational for any young nature lover, artist, do-gooder, scientist, whatever in your life. I'm actually crying after reading the book. So great!

My granddaughter is quite interested in wild birds at this time and she also appreciates the fact that the book was illustrated by a child. She is encouraged to try her hand at drawing birds, too. So the book has become an inspiration!

Olivia is an inspiration. My daughter had to do a project on a kid who had made a difference in the world. Olivia drew and painted pictures of birds to raise money for saving wildlife affected by the Gulf oil spill in 2010. What an amazing girl. Lovely book.

Pairs well with ReadWorks comprehension unit and is written by a little girl trying to make a difference! inspiring!

My grandaughter Olivia loves to draw and loves nature. When I saw this book in my library, I knew this would be an inspiring story for my little girl. Not a disappointment!

I use this book every year with my 4th graders, to show them what someone their age can accomplish.

I bought this as a gift but decided to keep it. I'll read it a few more times then gift it.

Paul Butler's "Chokehold: Policing Black Men" is a comprehensive study into the psychology of America's criminal justice (or injustice) system. In "Chokehold" Butler answers critical questions concerning the impact of the American criminal justice system on African American men. He provides well documented support for his conclusion that the system is designed to subjugate African Americans. Given the central role of race in the allocation of societal resources, Butler cogently argues that correcting this system is not merely a matter of clearing up misconceptions through dialogue or adopting modest reforms. Instead, he postulates that the American criminal justice structure must be restructured from the ground up. Butler effectively conveys the point that policing will not change significantly for African Americans until such comprehensive change happens. Until then, African Americans (especially African American men) will remain under a chokehold. I recommend this book.

This is an excellent book. It is essentially written for younger black males but is a useful read for anyone interested in racial/social justice IMO. Mr. Butler covers a number of issues around the criminal (in)justice system as it applies to black men but he also makes clear that black women are also victimized both from the color of their skin and their gender. In spite of being an old white male, I applaud Mr. Butler and other contemporary authors who continue to pull the cover back on the truly appalling situation we have in America regarding racial/social injustice. Given the politics of the day I fear it will get worse before it gets better. I encourage my fellow white people to read with an open mind and step up and speak out.

Chokehold is a great and necessary book to read even though the content is difficult. Anyone who doesn't understand why they kneel, whether appropriate or not, will understand after reading this well-written book. It made me angry, outraged, and very sad. It is a necessary book for anyone who cares about our failing criminal justice system

Outstanding read; an alarming honest assessment of the complicity of the U.S. judicial system, Congress, and law enforcement agencies. A startling take down of the inequalities faced by minorities, the poor, and immigrants legally exacted by the American justice system; an educational revelation. .

I was truly moved by this book. I have NEVER submitted a review for an Amazon our purhase before, this book is a must read for any person that has pondered WHY ???? For the conditions in the urban areas, for anyone that has wondered WHY at this point the condition of black people in america remains mainly unchanged even after having Mr Obama in office. This book clearly explains the Why and the How..

A devastating description of what it's like to be policed while black in the US. I couldn't help wondering whether some of the grander claims were overstated but then considered the evidence presented and found it difficult to dispute.

Imagine what things could potentially be like, or the much-needed changes that could be made if every black person, especially the prominent ones, exercised this sort of courage, ingenuity, and altruism. Props to Mr. Butler, and to this extraordinary Book!

Excellent and thorough anaylsis of an unjust criminal justice system towards/against black men but also take an introspective detailed look into the violent culture among black men. Highly recommended for anyone interested in a honest and forward think solution to the problems facing the criminalization of black men in America.

Amazon.com Review

The original, Aristotle's short study of storytelling, written in the fourth century B.C., is the world's first critical book about the laws of literature. Sure, it's 2400 years old, but Aristotle's discussions--Unity of Plot, Reversal of the Situation, Character--though written in the context of ancient Greek Tragedy, Comedy and Epic Poetry, still apply to our modern literary forms. The book is quite short, and Aristotle illuminates his points with clear examples, making the Poetics perfectly readable, the better to impress people at parties when you say, "Of course, as Aristotle says..."

A good guide on how to write a story. Forget all this rising action/climax/falling action nonsense. Instead have a unity of action, a noble character or protagonist with a human failing. Have him make a tragic error (hamartia) which will lead to a peripeteia or reversal of fortune... good luck to bad luck. Let the plot become complicated with unforeseen consequences which will lead to disaster in which the main character suffers the most as a consequence of his foolish actions. Let the story finish with him understanding that he is the author of his own downfall (anagnorisis). Let the reader go away with a sense of pathos for the protagonist. Read Sophocles's Antigone and you will see this perfectly.

I bought this because Aaron Sorkin said it was one of his favorite books on writing. I expected dense and it is but not in the way I imagined. It's also clever and interesting and in an odd way comforting to know these writing principles are ancient and true-- true in the way of hitting their mark. However, a practical guide on writing this is not, you have to sift through it to find what applies to your writing. Not sure I agree with Sorkin, but glad to have read it. Plus, now I can sound sooooooo cerebral when I tell people I read this.

I ordered this particular translation of the Poetics for a two-person reading group. The other member recommended it for the translation and this being my first reading of the whole text I was happy to go along. In the end it was a fine choice for the translation, but the commentary comes along with it and I couldn't leave it out of my review completely.First, the translation:No nits to pick here. It is very clear and readable. This isn't Aristotle at his most refined, but the translation should be accesible to anyone with the interest in reading it. Halliwell hasn't shied away from the overtly normative language that permeates the text, nor has he attempted to inject more structure or content than the text can bear.Given that the commentary is (apparently) geared to folks with an interest in contemporary aesthetics, it is nice to see that Halliwell has not colored the text in a way that might be more palatable to the contemporary aesthetician. A few passages sent me scrambling for the OCT, but I always ended up happy with Halliwell's rendering. Two notes: 1) Halliwell has opted for "mimesis" and "mimetic" throughout. This is a case of a philosophical concept in transliteration rather than translation, but probably ought to be. This choice, and a few others, make the text more appropriate for the academically minded, though the Poetics might not be leisurely reading anyhow...and 2) Halliwell's translation does not include Bekker pages nor numbers. Chapter breaks are included but are of limited usefulness for reference to the OCT, etc. Then, the commentary:I should admit that I am not the target audience for Halliwell's commentary. I would be an embarrassingly bad classicist, if I were to claim to be one...and I am not independently interested in contemporary aesthetics. That being the case, the commentary might be quite useful for other readers. Halliwell raises interesting points quite often and points up tensions in Aristotle's view writ large, but often misses the trees for the forest. Late in the book, admittedly where the lack of book II is most glaring, Aristotle introduces new machinery or recalls distinctions hastily made. Halliwell is silent here, perhaps because he just isn't interested in this fine-grained a reading...but that seems like just what a commentary ought to be interested in. One major issue is that the commentary occasionally reads like an argumentative essay - an argument for Halliwell's reading - but doesn't seem particularly well argued. Early assumptions are taken for granted in later chapters, etc.Since I am almost positive that Halliwell has other folks in mind, and since my interests might be especially idiosyncratic anyway, I have tried not to let my thoughts on the commentary cloud the overall review...The bottom line: if you're looking for just a translation of the Poetics, this won't disappoint. I can't compare it directly to other translations, but it is accesible and I didn't find much to quibble with when I turned to the OCT. The commentary isn't, and doesn't pretend to be, a concentrated analysis of the philosophical framework on offer. It is an interesting essay on the development of aesthetics, the bridge between Aristotle and contemporary thinkers, and is probably quite full of material that would interest classicists and aestheticians. I can't really fault the commentary for having a different aim than I had hoped, and one need not refer to it besides. For the student of Aristotle, someone interested in aesthetics and wanting to read this foundational treatise, or someone interested in the history of philosophy (or thinking in general), I think this translation will certainly meet your needs.

I read this book in an effort to enhance my personal hobby of script writing. If I recall correctly, I read somehwere that this is an important book regarding proper plot structure. Having read the book I believe this to be true. It touches upon tragedy, epics, comedies, plot, character, reasoning among other things.Granted, this was written at a time when theater and poetry were the thing (LEDs were not in fashion at the time). And when taken in that context, the book makes a lot of sense. I have since found the structure to be in many movies I have watched over the years. It has added significant value to how I am developing characters in my stories and the stories themselves. This is not a definitive guide. Story telling has eveolved throughout the ages. But, knowing the evolution helps write better. Or at least it does for me.As with the writings of all philosophers (and I personally like Aristotle), the text is meant to be studied. It is NOT a step by step guide. You read a little and think a lot. Happy reading!

This review refers to the "Penguin Classics" edition with an introduction by Malcolm Health: This book was often referred to by both my high school and college literature teachers although it has taken me an additional +20 years to actually read the book. I am glad I did. I think those interested in western literature or aesthetics will find Poetic's to be an essential read as it provides the initial codification of concepts such as tragedy, comedy, plot, unity, character, and katharsis. Malcolm Heath's introduction is absolutely essential and is worth the price of the book alone.

Not what I thought it would be. This has a hard-to-read, Courier 10pt, single-spaced translation of Poetics that is about as impenetrable as any other out there. It's backed by a mishmash of student exercises drafted in varying fonts. The exercises seem to have no relationship to the text of Poetics. "Annotated" is misleading at best.

A scam! This "annotated" version of Aristotles Poetics is nothing of the sort! The publisher simply stuck a bunch of predetermined exercises designed for helping middle school students write book reports after the original text in translation. Exercises which make no mention of Poetics, and shed no additional light on them. I want my money back!!!

I read the author's intro before getting the book and immediately saw the translator wasn't a big fan of paragraphs. The guy must have a vendetta. Big long tracts of text with very few paragraph pauses make this a real slog. There are much better translations out there.

This book is not to be confused with the R Graphics Cookbook by Winston Chang (O'Reilly Media). I own the latter and refer to it on a regular basis. I recently obtained a copy of the R Graphs Cookbook (2nd Ed) and was curious to see how it would compare to O'Reilly's version. The book has 15 chapters. The first 8 cover how to do traditional graphs such as scatter plots, line graphs, histograms, box plots and the like along with extensive coverage of tweaking graphical parameters. Chapters 9 - 14 cover special topics like heat maps, geographical maps, lattice and ggplot2. The final chapter presents several recipes for finalizing graphs for publication. Each "recipe" follows a template of first showing How to Do It followed by a How it Works section that walks you through the code. There's also a There's More section that offers extra tips or suggestions and finally a See Also section that refers you to similar recipes. The recipes frequently use sample data sets that need to be downloaded from the Packt Publishing site. Otherwise they tend to use data sets included with the base R datasets package or randomly generated data. Each recipe includes the graph that it produces in color, at least they do in the the PDF version I reviewed. (I don't know if the paperback includes color. For the asking price of $46 on Amazon I hope it does.)My overall impression of the book is positive. The recipes are practical, the explanations of code are clear, and there are several pointers to useful R packages. The chapters that really stood out to me (ie, chapters I could see myself using) were the coverage of graphical parameters in chapter 3, working with map and GIS data in chapter 10 and preparing graphs for publication in chapter 15.But the book isn't perfect. My biggest complaint is the book datasets. They're in a folder structure that doesn't always match the book's contents. For example there is a health expenditure dataset in the Chapter 3 folder that is not used until Chapter 4. As another example, the recipe for choosing plot symbols and sizes asks us to load the "cityrain.csv" data "that we used in the first chapter." But it's not used in the first chapter, it's used it in the second chapter. But in this case the dataset is actually in the Chapter 2 folder! I frequently found myself setting my working directory to use a chapter's dataset only to find the dataset wasn't there. All this could have been avoided by just lumping all data into a single folder. Or perhaps by making an R package that contains the book's datasets as the author of the R Graphics Cookbook has done.Another head-scratcher is the introduction to the grid package in the first section of Chapter 1. The section is titled "Base graphics using the default package", yet grid is presented as the base graphics package. It's not. The base R graphics package is the graphics package. The authors clearly know a great deal about creating R graphics, but I don't understand their reasoning for presenting the grid package as the default package for graphs. There are a few recipes that I think could be improved. The "Formatting log axes" recipe simply plots 10^1 through 10^5 with the log argument set to "y". Why not use one of the book's datasets and show a before and after graph to demonstrate how the axis changes with log formatting? For example:> metals <- read.csv("Chap 3/Data Files/metals.csv")> par(mfrow=c(1,2))> plot(Ba~Cu,data=metals,xlim=c(0,100))> plot(Ba~Cu,data=metals,xlim=c(0,100), log="y")> par(mfrow=c(1,1))The "Creating bar charts with vertical error bars" recipe in chapter 6 creates error bars by multiplying the plotted values by 0.95 and 1.05. Why not show how to plot actual standard error bars? In fact they conclude the recipe by saying "In practice, scaled estimated standard deviation values or other formal estimates of error would be used to draw error bars instead of a blanket percentage error as shown here." To their credit, the authors do show how to create conventional standard error bars later on in the ggplot2 chapter. At the very least it seems like the recipe in chapter 6 should have a See Also section that points readers to the ggplot2 recipe. One other recipe I thought could be better was "Setting graph margins and dimensions". It tells you how to do it but doesn't actually demonstrate it. It would have been nice to see the effect of changing the various parameters. In fact I'm still not sure how the fin and pin par() arguments work. Of course the authors go on to say "it is better to use mar or mai" instead of fin and pin, which I suppose is nice since I know how mar and mai work. But then why mention fin and pin in the first place? While I'm on the subject of setting graphics parameters I noticed the authors never explicitly explain how to restore initial par() values by saving the result of par() when making changes. For example,> oldpar <- par(col=4, lty=2) ... plotting commands ...> par(oldpar)They do it once in chapter 1 when demonstrating trellis graphs but they don't explain what it's doing or why it's there. I really believe that should be a separate recipe in chapter 3, "Beyond the Basics – Adjusting Key Parameters".Some of the recipes I really liked were "Setting fonts for annotations and titles", "Using margin labels instead of legends for multiple-line graphs" and "Showing the number of observations" in the axis labels of box plots. Those three are golden. The recipe for "Graph annotation with ggplot" is also quite useful. And I thoroughly enjoyed working through the "Data Visualization Using Lattice" chapter. I had never used Lattice before and found this to be an excellent tutorial. As I mentioned earlier, I own and make regular use of O'Reilly's R Graphics Cookbook. How does Packt's R Graphs Cookbook compare? The main difference is ggplot2. The O'Reilly book is almost exclusively devoted to ggplot2. In fact if not for the Miscellaneous Graphs chapter near the end it could very easily be called the ggplot2 Cookbook. The R Graphs Cookbook on the other hand is rooted in base R graphics. ggplot2 gets introduced briefly in chapters 1 and 4 before getting its own treatment in chapter 12. If you're looking for a ggplot2 reference, O'Reilly's R Graphics Cookbook is hands-down the best choice. But if you want a reference for base R graphics, then the R Graphs Cookbook is the better of the two.

What I like about this book is you can use it as a ready reference to almost all graph related problems for R. No need to follow the chapters in any particular reading order, rather use it in a true cook book style, looking up the index for the particular graph problem and use the code. Gets things done when you are in rush. Each recipe comes with a structured format, starting with one or two line problem statement, followed by "How to do it" hands-on code. And for those who want to learn in depth, the authors have included "how it works" and "there's more" sections for each piece, which give insight into the code and provides additional pointers to explore. As for the content, the book generously covers almost all common graph related recipes that one need in the real world today, starting with basic graphs such as line charts, bar graphs, box plots so on. However, what is more interesting is the in depth coverage of advanced recipes like Heat maps, GIS world maps, contour maps etc., which are real treat for any one interested in R graphs. Most of the graphs, though, are covered using basic plot primitives without relying too much on ggplot. However, one chapter is dedicated to ggplot2, covering the creation of bar charts, box plot and line charts with ggplot2.The final chapters on 3-dimensional visualization, inspecting large data sets, and exporting to high resolution image formats will be very useful for any professional working in the graphs. The final chapters also cover few basic details on working with colors, fonts and in general, graph templates.Overall, this books would be value add for any working professional dealing with graphs in R using basic techniques. However, if you are looking for techniques using ggplot etc. then this book will cover only few basic pointers and you should look somewhere else.
