This story was beautifully written. People tried to eradicate disease and in the process, caused their people to be infertile. So off the warriors go hunting for compatible females. 9 years pass before they find the 1st human on an auction block. My pet peeve with all of this genre’s world building where slavery is a common practice....1) not a universe I want to live in which makes romance harder to believe; 2) but even more sad is when supposed heroes rescue human females and leave the other alien slaves to their miserable fate. While I don’t expect the heroes to save everyone (that would be great though), I would expect that they at least attempt to save a few others, otherwise, I can’t see them as heroes. Instead they are just selfish men wanting a human for themselves for whatever reason....save a planet, mate, whatever. Is it too much to hope for a romance author to make the heroes a little more heroic. And the heroines care that while they might be saved, they left a lot of “slaves” behind to suffer a terrible fate.

My children LOVE all Usborne books so I was happy to see they had published this version of Little Women (it says original, meaning not abridged). However it's not in print any longer so I paid a bit more to buy a good used condition of the book. I'm in the process of reading it with my daughter and I realize it ends when Meg gets engaged. Which is really only half the book, leaving out Beth's death, Laurie and Amy, etc. Just FYI, since that probably explains why it is no longer in print and I would have purchase a different edition had I known that.

This is not the complete book. This is only the first part. Super annoying since I did not see it anywhere in the description. The book it self is wonder but this copy is a waste of your money.

Little Women is an old classic that was simply begging to be re-read. I think I started the book so many times when I was in elementary school that I had actually memorized the opening chapter. Every word rang as familiar to my eyes and heart as a forgotten Christmas Carol. But, but I don't remember ever finishing the book -- until this time. It's written in an old-fashioned style, and a little harder to follow than some more modern literature, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Even the rhythm of the words takes you back to a sweeter simpler time which was in reality a very harsh time in American history. For the uninitiated, LW details the life of four teen-aged sisters in the Civil War Era. Aside from their father being away from home during the first part of the book the war is not a main topic. It's all about the relationships between these sisters, their mother, their neighbor and later their budding romances.Take your time with this one. Read it slowly and savor.T

Kindle version is so bad, it's not worth the $.99. Literally could not follow the paragraphs, sentences, or line of text. This is a book I've read many times, and with a bit of nostalgia, decided to reread. Deleted after one or two chapters and repurchased a different edition. Don't waste your time.

This story opened my eyes as a very young girl to the awe and magic of books. For the first time, I realised what it was like to become immersed in the characters of a novel and enchanted with the loves and lives of Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy and of course, Laurie. As I was transported back to New England during the Civil War era, this book ignited a love of historical fiction that I have to this day at the old age of 69.As a child with no sisters, I read with wonder the day to day relationship between the sisters, leaving me envious and longing for that kind of closeness. When I first read this book, my youngest brother was very ill and died soon after, I felt such sorrow and empathy for frail, gentle Beth."Little Women" has the grace and charm of the 18th century and is a sparkling look into the fascinating world of girls as they become women. I recommend this classic novel to readers of all ages.

This is for the Kindle Edition: The story needs no review, but the illustrations can be a problem. They work fine on the Kindle app on my ipad. On my Kindle Fire, however, the illustrations don't work right and it causes you to loose the first sentence in each chapter. Not a real problem, but you should try for a sample first to see how that works on your device. The illustrations are nice.

Little Women is a timeless classic. The story is told in two parts. The first part focuses of the four young March daughters: Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth. The story is told in the nineteenth century in a town setting. The March family is a loving family with a wise and lady mother who is trying to teach values, empathy, and love to her four daughters, while their father is a chaplain in the Civil War. The family is poor and struggle with finances. But the girls, led by rambunctious tomboy Jo, have wonderful times as they read, sketch, write and perform plays, and invent secret clubs. Each girl is different in character with ladylike lovely Meg, boyish Jo, elegant Amy, and home loving, faithful Beth. Jo and her family adopt the motherless and fatherless rich boy and neighbor, Laurie into their family. There is love, laughter, sisterly quarrels, and sadness woven into a beautiful family story. In the second part, the story begins with the marriage of the oldest sister, Meg. and her new life as wife and mother. Jo pursues her interest in writing. Amy has ambitions of becoming a lady and marrying into a rich family. Beth must deal with her lingering illness and hopes to remain with her family. Laurie is in love with Jo, but will she return the love of "her boy." This second part deals with growing up, romance, and the 19th Century expectation for women to marry and become mothers. The March family will touch your heart and remain in your memory as they learn to step out on their own to transition from little women to beloved wives.

The classic, "Little Women" is one of those books many people think they have read because they've seen several versions of it in films. The book is much better than the films, as usual. Occasionally a little over the top in the sermonizing, but one has to remember that it was written in a more spiritually vibrant time - just after the US civil war. The strong bonds between the sisters are heartwarming. The family faces some serious hardships, but their love for one another and for their neighbors makes them take hard times in stride. The story deals with pride, envy, frustration and love in realistic ways. I celebrates creativity and perseverance. The characters really become dear to the reader. Jane Austen is brilliant at description. I wondered whether I would have different images of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy, as well as Laurie, if I had read the book before seeing Winona Ryder's version of the movie. I do think that film captured the essence of the March family. Young women should definitely take the time to read "Little Women."

A Decent Life: Morality for the Rest of Us, by Todd May

Review

"May has a knack for presenting philosophical concepts in ways that are easily graspable, and his advice for living 'a life with a goal more modest than altruism, but better than moral mediocrity' makes such a goal seem attainable for a wide audience. Anyone interested in living a more morally conscious life will want to give this wise guide a look."   (Publishers Weekly)"In the face of great injustice or radical indecency, it is tempting to give up our moral lives altogether. The challenges of being good seem impossibly daunting. Todd May has given us just a little bit of hope--a few practical suggestions for becoming just a little bit more decent. A Decent Life is the kind of book I will give to my students--or to my daughter: a humble, down-to-earth primer for living ethically in a world that seems intent on destroying itself. May has written a more-than-decent book. It is genuinely good." (John Kaag, author of Hiking with Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are)"Some philosophers have argued that morality requires us repeatedly to sacrifice our wealth and pleasure for the sake of others, including distant strangers and even animals. Recognizing that most people believe otherwise and are unwilling to live this way, Todd May offers an alternative, more realistic vision of the moral life that is neither saintly nor heroic but nonetheless decent. In writing that is lucid and enlivened by stories drawn from his own and other people's experiences, he reveals how, by showing appropriate respect for the fact that others (including animals) have lives of their own to live, we can satisfy the demands of morality while retaining our ability to have fulfilling and meaningful lives. Particularly in its discussion of our relations with political opponents, this book is a timely, illuminating, and inspiring work of moral philosophy." (Jeff McMahan, University of Oxford)"Moral philosophy often appears either as a very technical discipline or as a set of demands to be altruistic that few if any of us can realize. In this book, Todd May articulates the extremely appealing idea of a decent life as an alternative. He writes with the clarity of an analytical philosopher, but about existential themes that are usually addressed by continental thinkers. The book is almost completely without technical language, full of thought-provoking examples from everyday life, and it will be an edifying read for everyone who aspires to be a decent human being." (Svend Brinkman, author of Standpoints: Ten Old Ideas in a New World)

#102,701 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Todd May is a professor of philosophy at Clemson University who has written books on subjects like poststructuralist anarchism. These books are not likely to show up on most people’s bookshelves or Kindles, but this book might and maybe even should.A number of philosophers throughout the ages have developed schools of ethical thought, and in the first chapter May discusses theories like consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics from thinkers like Immanuel Kant, Aristotle, and Peter Singer. The problem with most of these theories, in May’s opinion, is that they set the bar too high or too abstractly, and it would be difficult to live up to their requirements. So A Decent Life doesn’t try to define what it means to lead a “good life” at a level that most people could not attain, such as altruism. Instead it lays out how we might lead a “decent life”, an approach that recognizes our moral limits. It also avoids for the most part casting moral actions in terms of duties or obligations but instead emphasizes conducting ourselves to make other lives and “our often fraught world” a little better off because of our presence.May’s approach to morality has a simple framework, “the idea that decent moral action recognizes that there are others in the world who have lives to live.” The rest of the chapters describe the various aspects of a decent life within that framework. First, there are our relations with the people closest to us, those with whom we have personal contact. Then there are the other people with whom we share our world or who come before or after us in the world. Broadening our recognition of other lives a bit further, another chapter talks about being decent to nonhuman life (even if you are allergic to them, as May is to cats!). The final aspect of the moral life is political, which recognizes that we are all members of some organized society, a political entity. In the concluding chapter, May tells us how we can use the stories we tell about ourselves to help us recognize what our own values are.May’s writing is insightful, often in ways I had not expected. I was struck, for example, by his description of the impact of gazing directly into someone’s face and how it makes us recognize that other person as an entity, a living being. Most of the chapters lay out general frameworks that will fit people in very different environments and with many different values. In the chapter on Politics and Decency, though, he becomes very prescriptive and is likely to alienate if not actually offend many decent people. For example, he says, “In the United States,…we cannot think about our political situation without taking into account the history of racial oppression. To attempt to ask the question of acting in a politically decent manner without reflecting on race would be to miss a central defining aspect of that situation”. He rejects the value system that many non-racist people espouse that prefers more race-blind attitudes. Both of these should be respected as “decent” approaches to political discourse. In addition, his discussion of political action is almost entirely about protest and opposition. He does disapprove of lack of civility in protests or instances when liberal protestors attempt to keep a conservative speaker from appearing on a college campus (or vice versa). However, there is little or no reference to more positive and cooperative paths to political morality, like working in political campaigns, serving on board and commissions, testifying on legislation, or lobbying for programs. The overall message from this chapter is that a decent life politically must agree with the author’s political philosophy, and as a result, many readers may reject what is otherwise an excellent book.If you share Todd May’s commitment to poststructuralist anarchism, this is definitely the book for you. Even if your approach to being decent politically differs from his, if you can ignore your likely reaction to May’s recipe for living a decent life politically, there is a lot to like and a lot to learn in A Decent Life. As the subtitle says, it is about morality for the rest of us.My thanks to Netgalley for an advance review copy of this book.

This book is valuable in a number of ways. It presents the basic ideas of free market environmentalism and compares the effectiveness of those ideas with traditional environmentalism. It contains a brief history of important environmental conservation figures such as Aldo Leopold and Teddy Roosevelt and summarizes where their ideas have been effective and where not. My favorite chapter presents data showing that things are getting better; natural resources are growing more abundant, food prices are falling, more food is being grown on less land area, and water is getting cleaner. I like having data like this handy.I you're looking for a concise, easy-to-read introduction to free market environmentalism this is probably the book to buy.As an add bonus it contains a dozen funny cartoons.

The environmental phonies should read this.

Greener Than Thou, the new book by Terry L. Anderson and Laura E. Huggins of the Hoover Institution, puts the environmental movement on a path toward free-market environmentalism--a path, Anderson and Huggins say, that is more likely to achieve the movement's goals.Historically, the freest economies have done better for the environment, while command-and-control economies have lagged far behind. Also historically, it seems "being green" has meant supporting top-down control.Democrats criticize the environmental record of the Bush administration and recall the good ol' days of the Clinton administration, when strict standards were placed on arsenic levels in streams and lakes and millions of acres were declared roadless.Republicans yearn for even earlier days, clinging to the image of Teddy Roosevelt as the original conservationist even though his great expansion of federal land ownership entrenched resource socialism on the U.S. landscape, harms the environment, and contradicts professed Republican principles.Big Business Taken InAnderson and Huggins also report a phenomenon we now witness daily: "Even big business, although risking being strangled by environmental restrictions, is accepting that change is in the air" and want a place at the decision-making table. They now fall in lockstep with the environmental advocacy groups who are in effect their captors. The book focuses on free-market solutions to environmental problems, emphasizing the important role of markets, incentives, and property rights. The authors state, "At the heart of FME [free market environmentalism] is a system of property rights to natural resources that whether held for individuals or a group, create inherent incentives for resource users."Myths DebunkedThe book debunks four environmental myths:1. No price for environmental purity is too high.2. Materialism and concern for nature cannot coexist.3. Constraining markets and the use of private property protects the environment.4. Malthusian population growth will outstrip resources. In debunking these myths, the authors reappraise interesting historical figures such as Aldo Leopold, often considered a bulwark of today's environmental movement based on his famous book A Sand County Almanac. In fact, the authors note, Leopold preached property rights and individual incentives to protect the environment, whereas Teddy Roosevelt, our first government conservationist, usurped private property for government control as had never been done before or since.New Approaches NeededAnderson and Huggins do an excellent job debunking the global warming scam in an unemotional "just the facts, ma'am" manner. Most unique to this book is an excellent analysis of how green groups are attempting to manipulate religion to their advantage. The authors conclude the book with a statement that might resonate with readers on either side of any political aisle:"Command and control environmental regulations, which in some cases improved the environment, have had their day," the authors note. "Many of those cases, such as stopping rivers from burning, eliminating smog in cities, protecting the bald eagle, and establishing wilderness areas, are examples of `picking the low-hanging fruit.' Legislation regulating point sources of pollution, halting the actual killing of endangered species, and limiting land use to non-mechanized travel in remote areas easily passed Congress because the costs were relatively low and the benefit relatively high."Going further, however, to pick the higher-hanging fruit for which costs are much larger and the benefits more debatable will require new approaches," they conclude.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jay Lehr, Ph.D. ([...]) is science director for The Heartland Institute.

If you want to read that everything is fine and believe that self-interest is the solution to all problems, read this book. Just like the invisible hand is making poor Americans wealthy, the capitalism will save polar bears. One short fact check on global emissions will show that this book can only serve as an example of "what scholarship is not about". The authors cannot call themselves scientists. They are simply believers.

This book is a perfect example of terrible scholarship. The authors provide ZERO counter arguments to test any of their theories. The ENTIRETY of their argument is based on cherrypicked, anecdotal evidence. This is simply BAD scholarship. For example, they use biased language to try and convince the reader of their ill-informed viewpoint, calling any scientists acknowledging environmental problems "doomsday" pessimists. They clearly have a biased agenda.Another example is how they claim "things are getting better!" while only looking at improving environmental conditions (some samples of water and air) in the U.S. Why have air and water improved in the last 30 years? The EPA, and the fact that we've shipped our polluting industries to China and Mexico. Of course, these hackjob authors are incapable of seeing through their own ignorant veil to understand this. They have no conception of the fact that markets don't have any incentive but quarterly profits, and that protecting endangered species and ecosystems isn't a good marketable "business plan." No where is there any mention of the extinction of the Amazon rainforest, coral reefs, depletion of Great Lakes and major aquifers,or the tragedy of China's environmental disaster. For these global warming denying quacks, science is subjective and economic freedom takes primacy over any human or environmental issue ever. They're unpersuasive, poor scholars. They condescend to the reader's intelligence, probably because you'd have to be a half-literate, scientifically ignorant fool with wool over your eyes to buy their terrible reasoning.

Review

Every young American hockey player should have to read the story on Hobey Baker, it's that emotional. The hockey, he's a fighter pilot, he's a war hero. It's too good a story not to make this guy a household name. -- Barry Melrose, ESPN/ / / /Tim Rappleye delivers a deep and thoughtful look into the life and times of one of America's greatest sportsmen who happened to also be one of the greatest of all American hockey players. I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the "way too short" life of the amazing Hobey Baker. -- JACK O'CALLAHAN, Miracle on Ice/ / / /Hobey Baker is known as the hockey legend from Princeton and St. Paul's School. Leave it to Tim Rappleye to discover that Baker is an original Philadelphia hockey guy, a player who lost a tooth de-fending his brother in a South Philly shinny scrap. Rappleye's telling of Hobey's farewell to hockey has created a whole new chapter in American hockey history. If you care about hockey, Hobey Baker, Upon Further Review belongs on your shelf. -- Keith Jones, NHL ON NBC / / / /Hobey Baker, Upon Further Review is a fantastic read. Not just a hockey story, but a real-life history lesson of an American sporting icon from years gone past. -- Pierre McGuire, NHL on NBC/ / / /I couldn't put it down. Tim Rappleye's tenacious, indefatigable research style has produced hereto-fore unknown aspects of America's greatest hockey player. Thanks to Rappleye's superior work, we know just about everything there is to know about Uncle Sam's Mister Hockey. -- Stan Fischler, hockey author/historian / / / /As a college hockey fanatic and a Princeton alum, I felt well versed in the Hobey story, but Tim Rappleye's book introduced me to many more layers of the legend. His research and storytelling live up to Hobey's exemplary standard. -- Nate Ewell, College Hockey, Inc./ / / /A wonderfully intimate narrative that flows like a novel. This flesh and blood account reveals so much that we never knew about Hobey Baker, including the circumstances of his death. His willpower alone wasn't enough to save a sputtering plane and himself. A tragic loss for hockey and America. --George McPhee, 1982 Hobey Baker Award Winner/ / / /Praise for Jack Parker's WiseguysA terrific read for fans and players familiar with that rough-and-tumble hockey vintage. -- Bobby Orr/ / / /A must-read book about a Division I dynasty and its Hall of Fame coach. -- Lou Lamoriello, STANLEY CUP-WINNING GM

A shelf full of books attempt to capture the achievements of Hobey Bakey, one of the great American athletes and an iconic figure of the early 20th century. Although most biographies cover Hobey’s triumphs on the football field and hockey rink and his career in the 1st World War, none match the immense depth of Tim Rappleye’s research or the insights into the character of this very enigmatic hero. Hobey’s death at the end of WW I marked the end of an era, a golden age of sportsmanship and gallantry. Anyone interested in this historical period and a biography of one of its most charming, gifted heroes should turn first to Mr. Rappleye’s book.

I loved Tim’s book. I loved the story of the American icon he retells, a story 100 years old. Especially I loved and admired his canny detective work in unearthing the facts. The passion of his search. His persistence over decades.Using the few shards of known information and like an archaeologist digging up some fragments of his own, Tim has believably reassembled a golden idol and fit him neatly into his epoch. From a handful of photographs, some yellowed newspaper clippings, a cache of letters and not much else but his insight, from sawdust and splinters, in the way Pinocchio was made human, Tim has brought to life a real man.Disclaimer: Just so you know where I’m coming from, I’m a friend of Tim’s and have had a more than passing interest in the legend of Hobey Baker for fifty years.Back then, as now, as always, our country hungers for someone to inspire and uplift us. We do love our celebrities, almost as much as we love our heroes. In Hobey Baker we have both. His story is almost too good to be true. That’s the problem Tim faced in writing this book. When it comes to Hobey, it is tough to avoid saying too little about him or saying too much. Taking the middle ground is no more likely to give the impression of truth.Someone acquainted with the facts will likely think Tim’s depiction falls short not only his own understanding, but of his convictions. The keepers of Hobey’s flame have resisted any attempt to separate the man from the myth. Then there will be the others, unfamiliar with Hobey Baker and his times, who will think Tim is toying with their credulity.Tim has walked this tightrope. He has done it deftly, in a fine clear prose, a remarkable achievement.

You'll get a big kick out of Tim Rappleye's biography of Hobey Baker. Hobey Baker was an extraordinary athlete, on a level with Jim Thorpe. His story is extraordinary, and Mr. Rappleye does it full justice. I enjoyed this immensely.

From the Inside Flap

Mitch Kehetian's Giants of the Earth is a memoir about the search for his father's sister and heritage in historical Turkish-held Armenia. The veteran journalist also shares snapshots on Armenia's history, from its very existence 2,000 years ago to the devastation it suffered during the genocide of 1915-23. The author's dramatic memoir comes to life in Moscow when an Armenian woman from his father's village in Turkish-held Armenia tells him that her brothers saw "Parancim" in 1947 before they repatriated to then Soviet Armenia. With the help of Congressman Lucien Nedzi and Secretary of State William Rogers, Kehetian was able to fulfill his mission to the barren, depopulated homeland of his ancestors in Turkish-held Armenia--a mission which ended with a prayer at his aunt's mountaintop gravesite overlooking the Euphrates River.

Great insight into what it was like to go back to Turkey to look for relatives after Turkey's ethnic cleansing of its Christian citizens during WWI. I never thought about what happened to the children that were left behind. I just wish there was a map in it so I could see where these towns were.

This book was so emotional. Thank You Mitch for this book. I recently went to Turkey and had many of the same feelings.

I decided to replace it with the eBook so I can access it all the time. When I first got it I could chain stitch, work stiches from single stitch through triple stitch and make a granny square. I found the instructions so well done that I think I could have started with a crochet hook, some yarn or thread and gone from there to as far as I wanted to go..This time I went to TYVC so I could create a toy dragon. I will confess that this was only after I bought several books and patterns I wasn't happy with. A quick look at the index and I found what I needed. I also decided it was time to get a new copy.If you only buy one book I recommend this one.

I'm very new to learning how to crochet. My neighbor taught me last winter as I was housebound with a cast on my broken foot. Since then I've borrowed many books from the library trying to find one with excellent pictures and very easy to understand directions. This was the book. I renewed it so many times I figured I'd just buy the book! The best one at least for me to understand the basic stitches and to keep referring back to. So glad I found this book on Amazon.

I had originally checked this book out from our local library. It was so helpful that I ordered a copy off of Amazon. This book is helpful for people like me, who need to "see" how it's done. It's a great reference book even after to you've mastered the basic concept of crocheting.I would recommend for anyone who is interested in learning to crochet or just to learn some new stitches.

I used to crochet years ago and I wanted to learn how to crochet again since I'm now a grandmother. I checked out several beginner crochet books from our public library. Of all of the books I checked out, the book 'Teach Yourself Visually Crochet' was the easiest for me to understand. The instructions in the book are very clear and each step is illustrated. I've not progressed all the way through the book, but I'm looking forward to it.Thanks to the clear instructions and illustrations in the book 'Teach Yourself Visually Crochet', I am learning to crochet again! What's even better is that I'm learning new crochet stitches that I never knew existed. Since I'm constantly having to refer back to the book to see how to do different stitches when I start a new pattern I decided I needed to buy myself a copy of this book.

Finally a book I can understand and visually see what each stitch should look like and how to do the stitches. I purchased 5 other books prior. This is the book everyone needs

I like this book due to it's clear and colorful pictures that outline beginning steps of crocheting, materials, techniques, etc. However, I found that the book was best used as a supplement to a DVD that teaches beginning crocheting. The static pics of the book explain a lot, but the art of crocheting is based on movement, and sometimes where to insert a hook or pull the yarn through can all look rather vague when not seen in motion. That's where a DVD comes in handy. I feel that in tandem with a video, beginners will get the most out of this book.Experienced crocheters would likely enjoy this book as a standalone reference since they already have the fundamentals down pat.

Beautiful color illustrations for every step. If you are a visual learner, this is the book for you. Easy to follow along. The only thing that could have made it better is if it was spiral bound. I have to use metal clips to hold the book open so that my hands are free to crochet. Lots of great projects for beginners to advanced. Well thought out.

I wanted to learn how to crochet so that I could make my baby a monkey beanie and other interesting hats. My grandmother was trying to teach me when she came to visit for a week, but she did not know what each stitch was called as she is self taught. So I found this book on-line and boy am I satisfied! It teaches you how to complete the different types of stitches, how to read the abbreviations for the different stitches, how to reach a pattern and even how to make different items (flowers, hats, scarf's, socks). I was able to make the monkey hat on the very first day I opened the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who was interested in learning how to crochet. It is very simple to understand with lots of beautifully colored pictures.
