This is the industry standard text for learning the complicated craft of audio engineering. I use it for two of the courses I teach in Recording Arts Department of Citrus College in Glendora, CA. It's been an invaluable resource for me since its early editions when Robert Runstein first published it, and David Miles Huber has carried the tradition admirably. Broken down into the logical areas of recording, each section covers its topic thoroughly, and as a bonus, it's easy for anyone to read. Finally, each edition manages to stay completely up-to-date with the latest developments in audio technology, no mean feat in today's fast-moving world. I have one minor complaint: there is a typo in Figure 6.9b on page 203 - the fourth box from the left is labeled "A/D conversion" when it should be "D/A conversion."

I use this book as the text in my class teaching Sound Engineering. I first obtained it in its 4th edition and found it to be well written, covering the ideas and concepts that give the student a broad view of the how the sound industry developed and functions, the science and technology behind it, and practical insight in combining knowledge, skill, and people to create commercially viable audio products. I urge my students to keep the book after the semester and to take the time to read the chapters not covered in the semester.

I've got a number of recording, "how to" books and other books on mastering, etc. I really like this version, especially of Modern Recording Techniques. He's updated it considerably to today's standards and to the kind of equipment most of us are using now, like DAW's, audio interfaces, etc. I think it's also a good book to refer back to when you need to. A beautifully constructed book, with an easy, readable history of cataloging and card catalogs, with interspersed images of library cards from the Library of Congress and a images of the corresponding book. It is quite informative and interesting, if you like the history of books.I am just barely old enough to remember, in the late 1980s and early 1990s: being taught about the card catalogs by the ancient-looking, spinsterish librarians; the ponderous-looking drawers of wood with metal facings; thumbing through the subject cards, author cards, and title cards; the text on the differently colored cards in any number of typewriting and handwriting styles; jotting down call numbers on slips of paper with short pencils; finding the book.If you're nostalgic for the old cards, you'll find this a perfectly fun book. An excellent look at a lost form of information cataloging, indexing, and presentation.4.5 of 5 stars.

And maybe not just librarians, but I'm one and can't tell. Good text, interspersed with wonderful card reproductions. Oh, those hand-written cards! They provide a flavor of literacy that will never return.

I am a retired history teacher and lifelong bibliophile. As a young boy one of my favorite haunts was the library. My first after school job in high school was working as a page in a public library. Suffice it to say, I found this book to be an absolute delight! It is a well written history of how libraries through the ages have tackled the formidable task of cataloging the books in their collections. The illustrations are beautiful and could easily stand alone without any text to make this book a treasure for any book lover.

I discovered in college just what a treat using the library card catalog could be: Subjects in the card catalog lead to other previously unconsidered subjects, which increased the depth and width of knowledge about and around the initial subject. This book rekindles that thrill.

Terrific historical account of the beloved card catalog, and includes wonderful photos of original cards and furniture and libraries. I'm a librarian who gave this as a gift to a retiring caloging librarian friend. She loves it! And she said her husband was fascinated, too.

The book entitled The Card Catalog, published in 2017, is an illustrated history of the Library of Congress’s old-school database of the same name. The authorship of the book is credited to The Library of Congress in general, though it does include a brief introduction by the current Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. I purchased the ebook edition of this title when it came up as a Kindle deal, so that’s what I’m reviewing here. The book is probably more successful as a print volume, however, because even on a large screen the Kindle app doesn’t display the photos very large and doesn’t allow zooming.I am a recent library school graduate with a particular interest in cataloging and classification, so I’m about as close to the intended audience for this book as you can get, though it does make an attempt to appeal to a broader readership of general book lovers. This book succinctly explains, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the continuous struggle to make an ever-expanding inventory of library materials findable and accessible. It is essentially a historical overview of the development of pre-digital metadata used to catalog library collections, beginning with ancient and medieval libraries and then progressing to the modern American library. Along the way, the reader also gains a lot of insight into the broader history of the Library of Congress—its origins, its transformation from a legislators’ reference library to a national public treasure, and its initiation as the bestower of copyright in America. After developing its own card catalog, the Library of Congress instituted its Cataloging Distribution Service, which sent copies of its cards to libraries all across the country, thereby influencing the development of library operations nationwide.The entire book can be read in about two hours, so it is by no means a comprehensive, authoritative overview on its subject, yet it provides much more information than one would expect from a coffee-table illustrated volume. For those interested in this topic, it gives enough detailed information to make you want to do further research on some of these fascinating people and projects. Towards the end the text touches on the creation of MARC records and computerized catalogs, but that’s pretty much where the narrative ends. The book doesn’t go into detail about the Library of Congress’s digital methods of cataloging because the book is primarily a nostalgic love letter to the physical, many-drawered oak cabinets full of 3 x 5 inch index cards.This fondness for the tactile card catalog many of us grew up with is evident in the illustrations as well. The book features many historical photos of The Library of Congress—its building, its directors, and its operations. The majority of the illustrations, however, consist of cover images and title pages of classic books coupled with their corresponding cards plucked from the Library’s actual cabinets. Some are handwritten, some typed; some contain annotations and corrections. As a book lover, I could look at pictures of old books all day, and this book contains a lot of beautiful images, but the pictures of the cards really didn’t interest or surprise me much. The overall card catalog system is a monumental achievement, but I didn’t feel the fondness for each individual card that the compilers of this book hoped I would.Any librarian will definitely enjoy this book. For the general book lover, it’s hard to say, as the text is more about book cataloging than the books themselves. Though the ebook version is a great bargain, the printed volume no doubt provides a far superior reading and viewing experience.

What a fun book! I got this book for my bookworm husband and he loves it. Card catalogs have so much history- the librarians, the patrons who checked them out, and the time an older book was popular. It has a little more than just a coffee table book, but it does look beautiful on the shelf too. I recommend this to all bookworm or someone who loves the printed word, they'll appreciate the history, not just the novelty.

This beautifully produced book will delight lovers of books and libraries. The history of book description and classification at the Library of Congress is interspersed with illustrations and books and cards from the massive LC catalog. As a librarian and user of card catalogs for many years, I found the history fascinating and the illustrations delightful. Every library and library lover should have this book!

Not nearly as helpful as the "CA Trails" series. The format is nice, and well thought out (section labels at the top of the page, lays flat, etc.) but, in my opinion, the authors wasted too much of the book highlighting SVRA (state vehicular recreation areas) and OHV (off highway vehicle) parks. This information is already plentiful on the web as the state departments provide lots of information and detailed maps for free. The whole point of buying a book like this is to find out about the trails that aren't already part of well established, state run parks.In other words, the book is thin on useful information about remote trails and wastes too much space on freely available information about enclosed parks. Covering the entire state of CA sounds nice but it means most areas are barely covered, and especially when you add in all of the unnecessary OHV and SVRA information.The CA Trails series is much more useful, even though you need to purchase different regional books. As a result, they are much more detailed and informative when you're planning an off-road adventure in a certain area. You get what you pay for.

Doesn't include a lot of trails i know of around me, which makes me wonder what other trails it doesn't cover that aren't around me.When i took it to Salton Sea, it was nice to see an accurate detailed trail map on paper.No worrying about battery, glare, or electronics.It is worth it if you want to go offroading in southern California, just don't expect it to include every possible spot.

As an off-road newbie, this is the perfect starter guide to get you going. The trail descriptions are helpful and give you a general idea of what to expect. It's not a comprehensive examination of each trial in fine detail, but it gives you enough info to feel confident in exploring. The color ratings of trail difficulty seem to be accurate, although as the author states, different drivers with different skill sets and vehicles may find some trails harder or easier.The color photos are great and the maps well drawn. They are not detailed enough to be a single source of navigation, however as long as you stick to the trails as shown, finding your way around will not be a problem. It is helpful to have a GPS and a detailed hardcopy topographical map and/or road map as well anytime you head off-road, just as a general safety measure.While this book is a good overview, I would highly recommend looking up the current status of any trails you're thinking of visiting, as road closures do happen. There are a number of excellent on-line trail guides that will supplement this book.

had the previous edition, so many great trails driven with it. this one is even better. the spiral bound is a nice touch to lay flat in lap or passenger seat while driving, while previous edition would close on you. also, this one has new trails, including nor/ central california, however, this edition does not have some of the southern california trails that were in the previous edition, and those are some good trails. this edition is also nice cause you can buy a separate sd card from the company and have gps so you dont have to reset odometer and read book while off roading.

This is the Bible of off road guides.Wells does an excellent job of describing and rating the trails.If you are planning a trip to any area that he has a guide for, get one. The book is very useful for planning and also as a mile by mile guide while actually on a trail.He rates trails by difficulty and also notes his favorites for scenery. Using those two criterion, I have planned two trips with great success.I own and have used five of his guide books - Moab, Colorado North and Central, California and Arizona.Highly recommended.

Good information but I couldn't download it to my kindle and the font won't get bigger on my kindle app on my phone, guess I'm using a magnifying glass when I'm on the trail. I was so frustrated with the digital version that I ended up buying the physical version. I am upset that I wasted money on the digital version first. Dont make my mistake. You will want the physical version on the train anyway.

I love this guide. The trail difficulty rating is similar to ski slopes. Do a few f the easier trails to see how it calibrates to your own driving. Love the turn by turn mileage details. Lot's of info on the history and scenic views. Love the spiral binder format, so you can fold it flat. The pages seem to be coated to resist water.

Very difficult to navigate through this guide book! Basically, every time you HAVE TO BROWSE it PAGE BY PAGE......Please send me a revised version, thank you!

This is a great book with delicious recipes. A great book that you most have. I one gripe is that there is no photos. Other than that it's great. Awesome job Ms.Hupp and I hope you make another cookbook.

This is very interesting. I had not realized how many things (besides frozen dinners) could be cooked in the microwave!

Many good recipes for any meal I recomend it for any body needing quick and easy recipes that taste good

A side dish I remember from the student union cafeteria included brussels sprouts, yellow squash, and onions.

Although I’m a pretty decent cook and enjoy cooking very much, I have to admit that I viewed the microwave as nothing more than a “food warmer.” Katherine Hupp’s little collection was a great eye-opener. With a busy family with late baseball practices or art classes, sometimes cooking a nice meal isn’t a great option for a weeknight dinner. With these microwave recipes, I can still cook good meals, but without the tied up time (or the sink load of dirty pots and pans!) Ms. Hupp has broken her collection down into “Main Dishes” and “Side Dishes” categories, with a linked table of contents to make finding the perfect recipe as easy as a touch on your Kindle screen. From easy barbecue chicken to loaded omelets, you can find nearly anything you are craving, converted for the microwave. Recommended for anyone who loves great meals, but can’t always find the time.
