The research of the history of beer in America and the details on how beer has evolved since Goose Island’s founding is incredible.While there are many great takeaways, even the people who are purely anti “Big Beer” can’t deny Goose Island’s impact on the craft beer industry. Just seeing the people who have come through Goose Island and the breweries those people have built or impacted in some way - New Glarus, Perennial, Off Color, Fremont, Side Project, Firestone Walker, Revolution - tells you that Goose Island has had a positive impact on American beer.And as a marketing and PR person, reading about behind-the-scenes strategies was an added benefit. Was not expecting to get some great marketing takeaways when I decided to purchase this book.Thanks for writing this Josh. It was great to see the history of how everything has evolved. I absolutely flew through it and I’m already recommending it to friends.

If you are even marginally interested in the current/recent dynamic between the independent craft beer business and the big boys this book is an absolute must read. The book is very well researched and yet is an easy read. I follow the business a bit but I learned a lot about the inner workings. This is a subject worthy of a back story and the author does it beautifully. He also does not take sides. After reading it is clearly up to the reader to reach their own conclusions about who is the good guy. I won't spoil the book; but if you love beer you'll love this one!

Being a home brewer with a long time interest in beers, I've had some general ideas of how the industry works and it's primary players, mostly formed by bits and pieces of news and other scattered information. This book paints a very clear and comprehensive picture of who, what, where, and reveals more of the stories and motivations behind the snippets that have been presented to the public. If you consume and care about beer, this book will give you a greater appreciation for what you are drinking and how it got to you. Even if you don't have any interest in beers, you will find this book to be a captivating narrative about small business, big business, and all the interesting characters and events that turned a simple shelf of Bud Miller Coors into an entire aisle of Bud Miller Coors with a multitude of different labels.

I loved reading about the history of the craft beer revolution from Goose Island’s perspective in the new book from Josh Noel. John Hall’s journey, Greg Hall’s rise, the early brewpub, and the story of Bourbon County Stout. It’s all so fascinating.What I enjoy the most is the incorporation of craft beer’s historical cast of characters from around the world that each offer a bit of color to an already enthralling tale. To see familiar names and what they have to say about Goose Island gives its story even more depth.All of it is presented in an informed and objective way by Noel, who does a good job of providing well-researched facts and great details that help paint a picture of the time, place, and people behind Goose Island’s ascendancy.The work Noel put in to find out the real story and tell it in a way that anyone could understand deserves recognition. The author lets us as the reader see the people behind the story for who they really are and made them relatable humans. A great read!

How did they go from being one of America’s best breweries to being a brewery prominently featured in every Buffalo Wild Wings and airport bar in the world? You’ll find out in this excellent book. It’s a tragic tale of a brewery becoming what they always hated.

The book is split into 2 parts that tell the rise of Goose Island and then the fallout from the selling of the brewery to ABI and how it effected the employees of Goose Island and the craft beer landscape overall. The author has a great way of giving the reader the relevant information without laboring a point. He is also adept at showing the events in the book from multiple sides: the Goose Island employees, the Halls, ABI executives as well as influential folks in the craft beer world. A great read and I highly recommend it.

This was a real treat to read. As a highly critical beer drinker who was a patron at Goose Island from the beginnings, Josh Noel's carefully researched account captures the essence of the rise, expansion, and sell off of many of the most recognized crafts beers. It is told in the setting of the beer industry, however it is as much a chronical of the consolidation of industry in the world economy. This is much more than a book about beer. I especially enjoyed how Noel discusses the forces and setting for the craft beer revolution, and the history of bland American lagers. It is entertaining, thorough, and written with a colorful tone. One of the best non-fiction works I have read in years.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know that much about the beer business, and my taste in beer itself would hardly be called adventurous. Also, usually, I read novels, but I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend. Turns out it's a fascinating and well-told story. It seems strange to call a non-fiction book like this a "page turner," but that's what this book is! I highly recommend it.

This was a very cute and simple book about the five senses. My 5 year old found it too simple though. This book would be great for a younger child that does not know about the senses at all. The illustrations are adorable and the writing is easy to understand. Because my son was already familiar with the senses I would use it in a test type of way by leaving out one or two of the words in the sentence for him to finish. He thought that was fun for a little bit, but then got over it quickly haha.

The book was well written with nice pictures. I guess that my comments are more about how the book is marketed. It lists 4-8 as its target audience. As a parent read book, this should be listed as more of a 2-3 year old book. I don't think that this would be my choice of a learning to read book. I thought that the book was about science. On that note, my barely 4 year old daughter had already learned about smelling, seeing etc. I had hoped that the book would have taken senses to another level, but it didn't. I would strongly recommend this book to parents of younger children, but it was regretfully a one and done for my daughter.

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book right now. It goes simply through each sense and then gives examples of the senses. Love how it ties in the senses to being aware.

This book is excellent, even for a preschool aged child, as it really breaks down the five senses in a basic way. An example is provided for each sense and then, the book explains that sometimes senses are used at the same time- examples are provided for this concept, as well! I used it in my preschool class when our theme was "The Five Senses!"

Mehrsa Baradaran is the author of The Color of Money and How the Other Half Banks and a celebrated authority on banking law. "to be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships."- W.E.B. DuBoisEvery few years there is a book that is so powerful it turns me into a book nerd, policy evangelical. I go out and buy several copies and press them into friends hands with the fervor of a recent convert and tell them they "NEED" to read it. I think the last nonfiction book to do this for me was 'Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right' or maybe 'The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.' Usually, the book has both a financial angle and a policy tint. It usually also explores unfairness. That makes sense. In my previous life I was a policy analyst and I now work in the finance industry as a financial planner. Most days, I'm a pretty mellow guy. I meditate, read, drink tea, Netflix and chill. But reading about inequality and unfairness, for me, catalyzes me for action.If the last few political cycles have taught us anything, it is America still struggles with its "original sin" of slavery and the ugly descendants of slavery: discrimination, segregation, inequality, despair. We have seen, just this week (actually for the last few years), protests about the way Black Americans are treated by police officers. That subject deserves its own space, so I wont dwell too much on that here, other than to say the interaction of Black Americans and police officers ISN'T simple. It isn't a subject that can easily be explained just by saying police are racists, or unarmed Black Americans should behave differently (different from whom?). There are structural, geographic, economic, historical, and political forces that all contribute to awful outcomes.Just like blue on black violence isn't easily explained in a tweet or a FB post, the interaction between Black Americans and banks has a long, ugly, and painful history. It is a history that is important to understand if one REALLY wants to explore topics like income inequality, segregation, credit, crony capitalism, corruption, exploitation, state power, wealth, etc... Mehrsa's book explores the policies, laws, programs, politics, economics, and history of black banks AND the history of Black Americans with banks. She points a fairly bleak picture of the fault/chasm that exists between the two financial markets that exist in America. One is the banking structure that exists for a majority of Americans and doesn't need to be explored. But for years that economic structure, that allows people to save (AND BORROW) didn't exist for a large segment of Americans. And when it eventually did, it was skewed heavily. Separate was never equal in banking. Blacks paid a heavy price to save, to borrow (if they could). Even laws that were designed to help pull Americans out of poverty, accumulate wealth and avoid taxes through home ownership, benefited one segment of America while ignoring or fleecing the other.It is a painful read. It is also necessary. Unlike Mehrsa Baradaran's* previous book, 'How the Other Half Banks: Exclusion, Exploitation, and the Threat to Democracy', this one spends little/less time on prescriptions. She is laser focused on what is wrong, what went wrong, and why. It is a dense (without ANY of the negative connotations typically associated with that word) book. One that required me to open THREE different post-it flag packages. I was marking things that were new, quotes that amazed, items I didn't want to forget and I often found myself marking 3 or 4 times a page.A few caveats before I end. This isn't a perfect book. It isn't as exciting as a Michael Lewis book (this probably won't get made into a movie) and the prose isn't as pretty as Robert Caro's LBJ series. But it is important. It is a labor of both love and skill. Reading some chapters in it, I could tell Mehrsa spent months in presidential libraries. Well researched books give me a thrill. Especially when you recognize that a certain nugget of data or quote may never have seen the light of day if it wasn't for the doggedness of a skilled lawyer/historian. 'The Color of Money' deserves to be in the library of anyone who deals with or seriously thinks about income inequality, race, banking, inner cities, etc.As a white, upper-middle, male who has benefited from educated parents, stability, wealth, and every advantage American history and politicians have blessed me with, it is difficult and humbling to realize just how many of the economic realities I take for granted every day weren't available to the parents of my black friends. Hopefully, more of these same financial realities WILL be available to the children of ALL my friends. Hopefully we can begin to cover both the scars of the disadvantaged, and the economic and social chasms that separate (unfairly) us. This book is both a bridge and a battle cry.

This book was shocking and powerful. As someone who does not generally read books about banking, I found it enthralling and heartbreaking. The author writes with an exceptional clarity that makes the material accessible and poignant. Before reading this book, I had never considered the connection between banking and racial injustice in America. Now, it’s hard to imagine any discussion of race that does not involve banking policy. Anyone interested in creating a more just society needs to read this book.

I absolutely cannot say enough good about this book. I deal with these issues for a living, and this is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read on putting together, dot, by dot, why we are where we are in 2017. How the author made it so compelling, readable, interesting and accessible is beyond me. The only negative thing I have to say is that the title does so little to belie the real significance of this book. It has a title that will turn off some because a book about banking sounds boring, and a book about a racial wealth gap would scare away those who would think it is too "radical." It is so neither!!! In a tremendously interesting way, the author does an incredible job of telling the story, step by step, of where we all find ourselves in 2017 and why. The factual, but not dry, story, is one that EVERYONE can learn from. It is truly, truly, an awesome book. I'm on my second read and I have recommended to everyone from my Uber driver to the head of the Finance department of a major university. Do yourself a favor and read it. You will NOT regret it!

As an American Citizen, whose American Citizen grandmother was depatriated during the Depression (1.2 Mexican and Mexican American Citizens were deported), and whose family felt the devastating reality of redlining in Los Angeles during the 50’s, this book unearthed a deep pain in me.The devastation of segregation, the internalization of failure and poverty without an understanding of the system that not only created but benefited from the anguish. This book left me exhausted and yet I like others who will read it will be left ultimately empowered.As James Baldwin once said, “The American Soil is full of the corpses of my ancestors. Why is my freedom or my citizenship, or my right to live there, how is it conceivably a question now?” When will America repay its debt.

To me, this seemed like a textbook, with very valuable business lessons. Very good illustrations of the actual negotiations scenarios from different fields including sports, government deals, etc. Only reason I am not giving 5 stars because of its textbook type format, but that is completely an individual opinion. One thing I noticed particularly is about generalizing the strategies explained here. I believe, in every situation, the context, timeline, stakeholders will be different and it might be difficult to apply the knowledge directly, and therefore, each situation should be dealt with the consequences of actions pertaining to that moment of time. Of course, the fundamental principles learned here will be helpful. Overall, this is a worthwhile book to add to my personal shelf and is in there now.

Another fantastic book by Deepak Malhotra. This book reminds us that negotiators are humans, using both real world examples (sports, entertainment, healthcare, technology, history, international relations, etc) and a few key principles. Having seen Malhotra teach (put this on your bucket list!), I especially appreciated the teaching tidbits he incorporated into the book. As someone who teaches negotiations to MBAs, I learned a lot!

Highly readable and applicable negotiating principles for all manner of interactions and conflicts though mostly for business. The author keeps the strategies and techniques interesting by framing them in the context of larger conflicts in which they were applicable.

This book is as fun to read as it is original and informative! A must-have for anyone looking to improve their negotiation skills.

This is a very nice book for those who are interested in what is was like to travel the Mother Road through Illinois, way back when. It is full of good period pictures backed by informative captions. I have had a lot of fun following what is left of Route 66 through Illinois via Google Maps and satellite imagery. Some buildings and establishments are still "there," most are not. I would have given this book five stars, but it really needed more maps beside the simple one at the beginning of the book. Route 66 through Illinois changed over the years via rerouting through various municipalities and it would have added a lot to illustrate the before and after routes. Verbal descriptions just did not cut it in this case.

I have the complete series from Illinois to California and some selected towns like where I live, Kingman AZ. Actually living on old Route 66 makes the series come alive and I've explored many places found in the books and photo documented them. They are a good read and the photos are good quality. I highly recommend the entire set if you are at all interested in the Mother Road.

This is the first book I have read in the series...having lived in Chicago and it's suburbs, the pictures are like going back to my childhood. ..all the photos tell amazing stories.This book is a great read for any Rt.66 traveler or anyone who has ever lived in Illinois.

The book started out with a great description of the setting that made me feel as if I were there. This talented new author is very good at using words to paint a very detailed picture for the reader. The fascinating story of a boy and a very special cat held my attention to the end. Every good book needs a villain, and this book has one in Brin/Brown. The author's storyline made it easy for the reader to dislike "the evil character". I could definitely relate to the boy's love of the cat. I didn't want to put the book down, and I will be anxiously awaiting the next book in this delightful series.

I haven't come across such a sweet tale in a while, a book that felt rich with history of cave dwelling people, yet at the heart of it all, a little cat, Angelica who appears at the right time to lead these people into a new land. A well-written book, interesting characters, description showing me times long past. A great story that I couldn't put down, and made me smile at times, and shed a tear at others. My compliments to a very good author who took subject matter we normally don't hear much about, and gave it a heartfelt twist with a truly angelic cat. Just loved this!

I really liked this book. it is aimed at a younger crowd, and of course people who love cats. I had two cats and had to have them both put down. It was very traumatic. how the author relates the cats mannerisms is terrific. I saw my 2nd cat in this story. How I feel toward my cats was revealed through the authors words. at the worst part of the book when the cat was going to be distroyed, oops, can't give that away...anyway, lets just say it brought alot of memories back. The way she weaves the underdog warrior with the cats mission was excellant. Lets say I always look for heroes in my stories. And to find this hero involved with,,,what...a cat..sounds alittle strange for a grown-up to read. This book will make the grown-up in you feel connected with the heart, your heart. I downloaded it to my Kindle and could not have been happier. I thank the author that she made it affordable to us Kindle readers. So if your sensitive to animals, especially cats, you will enjoy this book.

As an adult, I really enjoyed this story. It was well crafted and seemed to be well researched. That said, I would be very careful on recommending this book for children, as it accurately depicts the harsh realities of the Ice Age. I believe it has the potential to disturb some children, others will love it.

as i was reading this, i lost track of where i was and what i was doing. suddenly i found myself inside the story. Amgelica is a great character. the prose was extremely descriptive. i eagerly await the next book in the series. I keep thinking of this take on the 9 lives of a cat, and i keep seeing these scenes in my head like i have just watched a very good movie. well done linda deane, well done. i am the author of the Cat Land books. Cat Land: Midnight's Gambit (Volume 1)

I read this book twice.......once for me and the second time to my 8 year daughter. It's difficult to say which one of us enjoyed the story the most :) Even though it is a book aimed at children, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My daughter keeps asking when there are going to be more 'cat' stories for us to read. It is a thoroughly refreshing read. I loved the fact that it got my daughter asking questions about the 'ice age' so she also learnt as we read.

Ms. Deane takes her reader to an arduous winter during the Ice Age. Aric and the members of his tribe are nearly starving; barely alive. A gray kitten befriends Aric and becomes the tribes' salvation. Although written for a younger audience, I found myself invested in the characters and the promise of Anjelica's nine lives.

Angelica is an Angel sent down to Earth in the form of a cat during the ice-age to save a tribe of people from starvation.This extremely imaginative book should appeal to cat lovers and everyone who likes a good story.

I'm somewhat new to bread baking and I found this book to be informative and flexible with its recipes and directions. I started with the King Arthur Baker's Companion, but was a bit discouraged by the lack of variation in the recipes (mostly white wheat flour, lots of dairy, great chemistry review but not as much direction as I needed). This book, on the other hand, lists a white and whole wheat variation for almost every recipe, recommends substitutes to keep the recipes kosher/dairy free, and has a variation for food processor/steel blade and stand mixer for almost every recipe. The chapters include: basic materials, bread making from A to Z, basic yeast bread, corn and potato based breads, breads of all nations, sourdough breads, rolls, biscuits and muffins, quick breads, and twelve menus of baking. I've followed several recipes and have had great success with all. I've been trying to make a 6-braided challah without success for a few weeks now; I had followed written directions and watched videos that helped but always left me hanging mid-braid, but the directions in this book made it so simple to understand that I had it down in minutes. Now I can't see what was so hard about it! Finally, my son can't have dairy or soy, and so the recommended substitutes and notes when a dairy ingredient are optional in a recipe are really helpful.

... what I have managed to produce, following the very clear instructions, has been nothing short of beautifully produced and a feast to the taste buds.As a former professional baker (but not of Greenstein's experience or discipline), I can attest to the quality of care and attention paid in the assembling of not just the recipes included in this offering, but the choices, the descriptive instruction and some of the wonderful humorous asides thrown in for good measure. I will never cut and stipple at the same time -- not that I ever did to begin with.Out West, where I live, it is difficult to get "first clear/common" flour so I have not yet baked the Jewish Rye (NOT caraway or "light"), but I am absolutely convinced it will be everything one expects.As a native New Yorker, and having recently visited and feasted on the varied cuisine, I can tell you that when you bake these recipes, you're going to get a real taste of New York Jewish Bakery fare.I do everything by hand, no machines; I prefer the interaction with the dough, to feel when it's ready at each stage. BUT, if you MUST use a mixer, Greenstein has included modified recipes for you, too. Fact is, in a bakery when you're making 25 loaves or more at a time, you use a machine! But, when you shape the loaf, you gotta use your hands.The bagels, the Potato bread, the challah, the sour dough, the wheat, the everything I've made thus far is everything you should expect from a guy who baked as a kid and then made a career out of it, as he came from the "family" business to make it his own.You really want this book more than any other, trust me.I can't wait for his Pastry book. I salivate just thinking about it. I know it will take me back to New York and the Jewish and Russian bakeries. Ah, I can smell them even now!

The author definitely misses the mark with this book. The aim is pretty wide and he or she doesn't spend a lot of time with the details, which can be good or bad. It does have very good overviews and nice charts. For example, it has an illustration showing how peoples' faces change when they age.This book runs through the topics quickly and is more like cliff notes. It also gives you a good overview on how to set up scenes.I feel it would be a good resource, but I feel that it might not be a good starter book for novices, which is about where I am at when it comes to art.

This volume is literally packed with several dozens of "mini-lessons" in creating Manga, including drawing, story layout, character design basics, lettering, and plotting the story. Each lesson is about a page or two in length, so there's quite a bit of useful information in the book.Other books in the "HTDM" series cover many of these topics in much greater detail; however, "Super Basics" is handy for quickly reviewing a particular technique or concept. If you aspire to draw manga, the book will give you a taste of what goes into producing a Japanese comic. And if you hit a creative block, I bet you'll find a lesson or a tip in "Super Basics" to get you going again.As other reviewers have mentioned, "Super Basics" assumes you already have some proficiency in drawing; it is more concerned with the down-and-dirty details of producing the comic itself. Even if you have some manga-drawing experience under your belt, I suspect you will learn some new tricks from this book.

This is hands-down the most complete book available that covers drawings and making manga out there so far! It's chock full of info (191 pages!) and covers everything - even making your manga title, types of manga genres, props (machines, daily items, etc), adding text, manga layouts, and lots more.I would recommend this book as the first book you should get if you're really interested in making manga (even beating out the HTDM Getting Started or the HTDM Vol. 1: Compiling Characters book, in my list). Each chapter is subdivided into their own topic sections. For example, under chapter 5, there is: Insects, Flowers 1, Flowers 2, Grass and Trees 1, Grass and Trees 2, Grass and Trees 3, Water, Rocks and Stones, and it goes on. Considering this book touches upon a lot of topics, it only gives out the most important info about drawing or doing something. From here, you can opt to get more topic-specific books like the HTDM Giant Robots or other specific How to Draw books.The characters depicted in this book are more on the Saturday morning cartoon end but don't let that turn you off, though, as the information in here is priceless and helpful even to an intermediate artist as myself.This is an excellent book to get for the beginner artist or aspiring manga-ka and becomes an all-in-one reference book about manga even if your skill improves.

Angel Matsumoto's style of drawing isn't like the other how to draw manga artists' at all, but that's not a bad thing. Her style is more kid friendly to me and that's totally fine. Her book's content includes: Chapter 1- Materials and simple means of usage, Chapter 2- Creating manga, Chapter 3- Drawing people and animals, Chapter 4- Manga techiques, Chapter 5- Depicting greenery and 3- dimensional objects, Chapter 6- Creating well- composed manga, and as a added bonus this book talks about: In depth discusion: 1. What is masking? 2.All about tracing 3.Creating new characters for publication submissions 4.Exaggerated people and animals 5.Cut and paste and 6.collecting reference materials. If you ask me, this book has it all! It is extremely useful and it gives you a little nudge to coming up with your own unique style. This book is perfect for those starting out with manga and need a little help with certain areas. I would definately recommend this book! This book doesn't have any nudity at all, so it is perfect for those who are offended by nudity.
