My husband and I recently spent five days in Tokyo, and this book was invaluable. All the "standard" guides cover the major places to see, but this one fills in the local color and neighborhoods. As an example, after seeing the Meiji Shrine (on everyone's list), we followed the author's suggestions to several nearby shopping streets he identifies as "young quirky Japan." So interesting! As a paperback with two facing pages per walk, we carried this book with us wherever we went. Really added so much to our trip!

I purchased this book for a trip to Tokyo next Christmas. My husband and I lived in Osaka 10 years ago, but we have very little experience with Tokyo. So far, this book seems very user-friendly and well-designed. I love that every walk has a featured coffee shop and lunch spot. What great touches! Also, the slim design will make it easy to carry with us.

We use it every day on our last trip to japan (November 2018) it is accurate, food suggestions are awesome and day trips close to Tokyo are very good too. It is on our pocket for all the week we spent in Tokyo.

My daughter (in her late 20s) is currently using this book on a trip with friends. She reports via text it is a "great book" and their favorite guidebook to use. They like getting "to know general vibes of neighborhoods and paths." She recommends it.

Has done great suggestions for walks off the tourist trail. Relatively easy to follow!

I did not find this a helpful guide for exploring Tokyo neighbourhoods. I was hoping to find something to inspire me to get out and explore new areas (to me) of Tokyo. This was not that type of book. I did find many useful links to Internet sites, and they may help me to get out and walk. I would not buy this book.

I bought the electronic version of this book because my hardcover copy was getting a bit worn. Actually more than a bit worn.As blasphemous as this may sound, this is probably my favorite book by Anne Rice. Maybe it was the age I was at when it was released. I don't know. I can honestly say that I have read, and pretty much loved every book she's written, but this one put so many hooks in me that I guess I never got away.There are so many stories going on. There is the child, practically stolen at birth. The ghost that gives wealth and power while it plots it's future. The lost women, used and discarded. An evil woman so cloaked in self righteousness that she believes her behavior is not only acceptable, but necessary. And the witch determined to free the family from it's curse.Witch burnings, the Renaissance, moving to the New World, the Jazz Age. After all, this story covers some 300 plus years. And then there is New Orleans and the House. There is simply no other place like New Orleans. Even today the streets, houses, cemeteries, people, churches and sometimes, it seems, the very air are different. A very Old World place plopped down in the New.I truly believe that in just about anyone else's hands all of the threads of this story would be a knot so tangled it would require a knife to undo. A really big knife. How she manages it is beyond me- but she does. Beautifully.So, if you like history, romance, mystery, suspense, and some seriously spooky goings on, you might love this book as much as I do. Well, almost as much.

This took me a long while to read. I am so glad I powered through it! I however was not so fond of the ending. I understand that this is a series, but I feel like Anne Rice didn't intend for it to be whenever she started this book. However, It kept me interested, unfortunately the Mayfair history tends to drag on. But the background and history is key to understanding the book, I realized this later on. If you are looking for a book to keep you occupied for awhile this would be my suggestion. If you are looking for a quick read, skip this one and come back when you're looking for a story (series) to get invested in.

The book is absolutely amazing. I thought the Vampire Chronicles were good, and don't get me wrong, I do love them. But the Mayfair Family and their long, chaotic history is simply amazing. I was so enthralled with the history of how the family came in to being; starting in Scotland and ending up on First Street in NOLA. This is also a story about strong women, matriarchy, magic, and sex! There is a historical feel to it, as well as horror and sci-fi. From the moment I began reading the vivid descriptions of the architecture of the Garden District homes, I had to get on Google Maps to see for myself. And the women of each generation are each amazing in their own right. This is one of my favorite books, and I strongly recommend it.

I love this series. One of my all time favorites. They are the books I read again and again, like visiting old friends. Fantastic character development, intriguing plot, and beautifully written. They evoke an inexplicable feeling when I read them (or think about the characters), if I were forced to describe the feeling I would us the words: visceral, and highly visual. Anne Rice has created a world that lives in my imagination, where these characters live that has become a place that feels almost real and tangible. Anne has given me more with this book than a great story with compelling characters I love, she's given me inspiration, and often a much needed escape during challenging times in my life.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****This was a reread from my long ago adolescence when I loved everything Anne Rice wrote. It didn't quite live up to my previous 5 star rating, mainly because it was just too long. A lot of repetition in the narrative, and we went down a few worm holes. But it was well written and engaging and gave me enough of the chills I was looking for.I love her descriptions of New Orleans, the epic history of the Mayfairs and the mysterious Talamasca. Rice also does a very admirable job fleshing out her characters for the most part. I admit to a growing confusion with the ever lengthening family tree and definitely stopped remembering all the Mayfair forbearers after a certain point.I enjoyed most all of the storyline until we came to the horrific birthing scene. I didn’t really care for that and felt Rowan’s disappearance a bit of a cheap trick. Not sure I’ll pick up the next 2 books in the trilogy,but it’s a possibility. If I do, I hope there’s a geneology chart included.

This book was recommended to me by a friend when I mentioned that I'm a fan of horror/thriller fiction but didn't really care for Anne Rice's writing. I loved the historical aspect of this book but still didn't truly enjoy the read as I have with other authors. I'm sure Anne Rice fans will enjoy this work of fiction but I'm still not a fan. I did, however, enjoy the historical aspects of this novel and enjoyed the setting and descriptive imagery. When I picked up the 2nd book of this trilogy, "Lasher" I found myself closing the book and putting it away probably for good. There's just some aspects I can't move past.

A story of a witch family in New Orleans. (a friend sent me a photo of their home that still stands). It is a bit of a slow read because it reads more like a history than a novel as it goes back to early Scotland and brings the reader into the 70's. A little tedious at times but I did enjoy reading it.

Sorry to say that I read these books years ago and have never left a review. This trilogy are what made me fall in love with New Orleans before I’d ever step foot there and also in love with the Mayfair family even though they are quite...different. To me this trilogy is the best writing from Miss Rice and I have been on an avid quest to find anything that elicites even half he excitement and intrigue that these books gave me. So far I’ve found nothing. These witches are of a kind in every way.

A wonderful way to teach young children about Van Gogh. I bought this before taking a 3 and 6 yr old to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and it made all the difference. They were so excited to find paintings they saw in the book at the museum and made great observations at the museum on account of having studied the colors in the book.

The condition of the book was good, but I was disappointed some of the prints of his photos were cut off. Starry Night is not suitable for a square page format.

I used this book as an introduction to an art lesson on Vincent Van Gogh. The length and depth were perfect for my kindergarteners and ESL first graders. The pictures are exquisite, and the narrative is mostly from Vincent's own writings. I had been looking for awhile for a book on VVG that did not focus on the tragedies in his life, but rather focused on his amazing art. I was happy to discover this treasure!

I was disappointed that the reading level was too low - about K-1. I had expected more. The illistrations are wonderful.

I have been an early childhood educator for over 39 years and am delighted that "Vincent's Colors" is available to my young students, ages 3-6. It is an exquisite introduction not only to the work of Vincent VanGogh but to the observation of color and art forms. In addition, the vocabulary associated with each picture links literacy to this introduction to art. Research clearly shows that the arts strengthen brain connections, particularly during the first five years of life. Every young child deserves this book in their early library!

Really great book. I am studying artists and Van Gogh's life and talent and energy in his work is wonderful to learn. Thank you for this book.

About the Author

Terry Burgess is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Tarleton State University. He and his wife, Elisabeth, moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1999. They both have worked in the financial and banking industry as business analysts. Terry is the former president of the Chasing Gold Toastmasters Club, an ordained minister, an author of five fiction novels, and the current Vice President of Gold Star Family Relations for The Apache Warrior Foundation. Elisabeth is the current Treasurer of The Apache Warrior Foundation. Sure, the story is fairytale-like and presented in a jaunty, casually nonsensical way, but it is absolutely the stuff of nightmares. Lucy hears wolves hustling, bustling, crinkling, and crackling in the walls of the old house where her family lives, but no one believes her. Her mother says it's mice, her brother says bats, and her father says what everyone seems to say, "If the wolves come out of the walls, it's all over." Lucy remains convinced, as is her beloved pig-puppet, and her worst fears are confirmed when the wolves actually do come out of the walls. Up to this point, McKean's illustrations are spectacular, sinister collages awash in golden sepia tones evocative of the creepy beauty in The City of Lost Children. The wolves explode into the story in scratchy pen-and-ink, all jaws and eyes. The family flees to the cold, moonlit garden, where they ponder their future. (Her brother suggests, for example, that they escape to outer space where there's "nothing but foozles and squossucks for billions of miles.") Lucy wants to live in her own house...and she wants the pig-puppet she left behind. Eventually she talks her family into moving back into the once-wolfish walls, where they peek out at the wolves who are watching their television and spilling popcorn on slices of toast and jam, dashing up the stairs, and wearing their clothes. Gaiman perfectly writes about what happens when we avoid difficult topics, aka the "wolves in the walls" and how facing those topics head-on are the only way to regain control of life. Main character, Lucy, is the only family member who makes the conscious decision to see that something isn't right and makes a point to bring what's wrong into the light. Female heroine. Absolutely beautiful artwork. Have used this book to read to children who have experienced trauma and domestic abuse.No violence, but may be scary to younger readers.

This book leaves me in an uncomfortable position of being unable to possibly gush enough about it while simultaneously at a loss for words worthy to describe it.Put simply: I now know what the very best picture book ever written is.So I'll start with the pictures: McKean's artwork is beautiful; both strangely abstract and touchingly real. I won't even begin to question how he did it, but a part of me can't help wondering how it's even *possible*.And Gaiman's story? It's the shortest of his work I've ever read, yet it's absolutely complete, with nothing left hanging loose (except of course the parts that SHOULD be loose). I don't want to reveal more than that; it has a wonderful "surprise-that-should-have-been-obvious" quality.Put simply: if you even THINK you might like to read this book, whether for yourself or someone else, just slip it in your next order. You'll be glad you did.

I don't think I really fell in love with this book until I started reading it aloud to my daughter. I remember reading it to myself first and thinking it was clever and witty and had beautiful illustrations, but when I read it for her for the first time I found myself taking on the different voices of the characters and making sounds effects and really letting the story take us both elsewhere for a while.It's a simple story: young Lucy hears noises in the walls of her house, and she is convinced that there are wolves living there. None of her family believes her and dismiss her concerns, but she maintains her belief. When the wolves (of course they really are there!) come out of the walls, they do what any wolves would do -- chase the family away and take over the house, wearing the family's clothes and playing video games and eating toast and jam in front of the television with the volume as loud as it would go. The family, with nowhere else to go but led by clever Lucy, has to take their turn inside the walls of their house.It is as smart, funny, and canny of a book as we might expect from Gaiman (who is often at his best when writing in the short form like this) and is accompanied perfectly by McKean's unique style of illustration, well suited to the story.But as good as it is, believe me when I say it gets ten times better when you read it aloud for someone. Watching a child's eyes as they get engrossed in the story, as they get excited in the parts where the wolves finally appear, as they sparkle with laughter when they see what the wolves are doing, is its own brand of magic. Once they learn the story (which does not take long, Gaiman makes it easy for them), you'll find them reading parts of it with you, like the repeated statement about what happens when the wolves come out of the walls: "It's All Over!"My youngest daughter now requests that I read 'The Wolves in the Walls' to her nightly, and if that doesn't tell you this is a great book for kids, nothing else will. And, because I love it too and I love reading it to her, I do.This is a very, very special book to us.

After several LONG car trips with our 4-year old who wanted to listen to the audio version of this over and over and over and OVER we got him this book version. He loves it just as much and the illustrations are amazing. The story is told from the point of view of a little girl named Lucy, whose parents and older brother don't believe her when she hears wolves in the walls... and is proved to be right! Lucy leads her family through the adventure and is a lovely heroine that children will identify with. Neil Gaiman is one of our family's favorites, whether writing for children or adults. Another point: we've found that our son is very happy if we put on the audio version and he can turn the pages of the book and have it "read" for him by the author himself.

Neat story, fun writing, cool, & unique illustrations.Not what I expected. I had slightly higher excitement expectations for the ending based off reviews, but this is still a good one. I love the writing style throughout.Also, my copy came brand new in perfect condition. I would purchase again.

I could infinitely gush about the brilliance of Neil Gaiman, but I'd only be telling you something you already know. That being said, I loved this "kids" book. But it's not. Not really. The appeal of Gaiman is his ability to tap in to the child inside of you and allow you go back to your childhood for a brief moment. It's at that moment you can suspend disbelief and let yourself nod that "Yes, there easily could be wolves in the wall."This book was charming, witty and danced along delicious words at a delightful pace. I'll be sharing it with my four-year old nephew and 53-year-old mother.

I was a bit unsure when I saw it, mostly because of the style of drawings, but it was a big hit with my 6 year old. He thought it was great, and went back through to re-read his favorite parts. I've promised we can read it again tomorrow.

Got this as a gift for misquided grandchild. Would not consider reading it myself.

Excellent! Important to review what has happened as we try to rewrite history. Reading this book helped to explain so much and help me recall what was going on. Perhaps if more people read this, we would actually learn from history rather than repeating. Should be required reading for all Democrats who are running for office.

Foxes in the Henhouse should be required reading for any Democrat or Independent who loves this country and is unwilling to let it continue on the Republicans' disasterous course. (Any writers willing to say that Reagan couldn't carry LBJ's jockstrap are aces in my book!)

Too much of this book is spent on telling Democrats how they can win back the White House, and, more importantly, the voter's trust. Nice premise, but it lacks imagination. While they make a good case that Republicans lie their way into wars they can get out of and give taxpayer money to wealthy associates, authors Steve Jarding and Dave Saunders spend a lot of time complaining. This is probably what makes the Democrats. Democrats whine about everything and agree on next to nothing. There is no sure thing if you're a Democrat (nominating a decorated war hero for president to oppose a clueless draft dodger) didn't accomplish anything. Of course John Kerry had the charisma of a fence post, but that's another issue.One area of concern is the author's ability to gloss over reality. Take the opening sentence to chapter 5 on page 105. How many blacks or homosexuals, or any other left of center group could identify with the statement that "several generations of Americans had witnessed firsthand the power and compassion of a government dedicated to equality, justice, fairness, and opportunity[?]" Jarding and Saunders seem out of touch, way out of touch, with the plights of many Americans who likely would associate themselves with the Democratic party. Good for what they are. My three year old did very well with these. After he mastered these we used "First Little Readers" pack "B" then pack "C" which he did very well on both also.

I am so pleased ! My son had been encouraged to learn to read by this very simple yet VERY effective approach to learning sight words ! So excited to have found these. In our first day working with the books he has already mastered the first 3. He has learned 10 different sight words! My son is 5 years old and did already know his letters and most letter sounds.

I am homeschooling my son for Kindergarten this year and so far, none of the RAN boards,"Read in 100 lessons" books, Sight Word Flashcards, or even a Sight Word tablet app (that got great reviews from others) worked. My son would get bored after a couple of tries and not even an hour later would forget the words we went through.Out of desperation and frustration, I went through Amazon trying to find a system that would actually work for him. Somehow I stumbled upon this product and started reading the reviews and descriptions of this system. The price looked reasonable (if it doesn't work then at least I didn't lose too much money) and the system itself seemed to make sense (story with sight words repeated throughout and a short quiz at the end).2 days after ordering we got it in the mail and I immediately dove into it. Having read the parents workbook, I called my son over to see what the first two sight words (they, go) would do for him. We sat down like we do for our daily reading time and I first read the book outloud while pointing to the words. The book was entertaining enough for him to enjoy the illustrations and short enough that it didn't make him lose focus. After the first time he wanted me to read again so I did. The third time in a row, I asked him to try to read along with me. The fourth time, he was able remember the sight words on each page and even passed the "quiz" on the inside back cover. He was so proud of himself he wanted to do it again, including the quiz. Just to ensure he wasn't just memorizing a pattern, I would point to the words in different order when doing the quiz.By this time he was so happy he wanted to "read to grandma" so we called my mom and as I pointed to the sight words on each page, he would read them. We got to the quiz and he passed with flying colors!Then he ran off to play/watch tv and I put the books away. 2 hours later, hubby came home and my son wanted to read to him too. It had been a couple of hours since he last saw the sight words so I anticipated some struggling. He did mess up once or twice but I had him calm down (he was super excited), breathe slowly, concentrate and focus on the words. He was able to read both sight words both in the story and when I gave him the quiz in front of daddy.Bottom line: THIS SYSTEM WORKS!Now I can supplement this with phonics reading for non-sight words and he should be ready for 1st grade at a school next year!

Super happy with this set of early readers. We have a couple set of BOB books and I was looking for something different for “first” books that included sight words. BOB books are great don’t get me wrong, but I was honestly just a little tired of them and looking for another set that had more color and were different...These books are a great little size and come in a sturdy box with holder. The pictures are bright and colorful! I love that each book works with certain sight words and the words are repeated throughout. Good way to practice sight words “in practice” while reading as opposed to just learning sight words via flash cards. Would definitely recommend this set of early readers. Will look into other Scholasitc reader sets.

My son loves these books. He still reads through them and he's in first grade. His teacher suggested that he keep reading a little below his reading level at home, to help build confidence at school. This has worked wonders because he has doubled his reading level in just two months.

My daughter has struggled with learning to read. Most of her practice up to this point has been sight word practice, or trying to read books where she has to sound out every word. It gets boring and frustrating for her. These books focus on just a couple of sight words and use pictures to indicate the meaning of more difficult words. The repetition is great of building fluency. The best thing about these books is that they make her feel successful! After she read the first one she started jumping up and down, she was so excited that she read a whole book.

Im very impressed with this set. I pull the books for the sight words my son is working on. There are 2 sight words for each book. The book is very short, so my 5-year-old does not lose interest. The best part is that he thinks he can read. The pictures give the clue of what's going on, but he still has to know the sight words to read the pages.

Even her four-year-old sister wants to give it a try after seeing her big sister “read.” I have recommended the set to many of my friends.

At the end of each book there is a chart with the two sight words. I have them point and say the words after each book!

But, lucky for us, when he died Bill left this memoir in one of the drawers of his many file cabinets. And as he would say, this book is a lulu. I keep turning over rocks trying to find out if he intended this book to be published. I mean -- One assumes that Bill Cunningham would only have to make one phone call to have a juicy book deal. And yet this typed manuscript languished in a drawer; only to be discovered after he passed. So - draw your own conclusions.It's a slim volume full of goodness. It is written in a breezy personal "oh, WAIT for the punchline" style, punctuated by Bill-isms like "It's a dilly!". Best of all, it gives us a deep dive into his earliest days; revealing a lifelong Creative who got anything-but a standing ovation at home. He needed to get out into the world in order to find his tribe; and all that ignited in Manhattan circa 1948 and onward. While we learn about Bill's earliest days in retail, the story quickly transitions into his career as a milliner. A hat guy. His moniker, William J, was a non de plume for a young man whose family would have been scandalized to learn what he was actually doing. But Bill always amassed his own custom-ordered cheering section; whether they were fresh young things who became fabulous mannikins for his creations, and protective grand dames who bought his hats and then brought their friends. The irrepressible "hey kids, let's give a show!" vibe prevails -- I lost track of how many times he moved and moved and moved his studio/storefront -- but each time he managed to create beauty in the midst of creepy/moldy low-rent brownstones, and his career was defined by both epic feasts and dire famines. Decrepit walls were covered -- voila! -- with brocade drapes found in a dumpster and ostrich feathers. (no, really...…) He was famous for carting around his own bed, because he always "lived above the store". Any money he had was always put right back into the business, and lean times found him eating hot dogs at Nedick's. He was a total misfit for the world of retail and manufacturing -- but was a whiz atOne Of A Kind. When the Sixties arrived he realized that hats were going to be a non-issue; so he pivoted to writing for Women's Wear Daily and seemingly taught himself photography. Like Zelig, he seemed to be everywhere before it became Somewhere. He had a storefront in the Hamptons before it was considered anywhere special. When uptown was hip, he was in The Village -- and when downtown was "the place" he was up on Museum Row. He loved theatricality and occasions. The book has a generous handful of his personal scrapbook snapshots, and we see a wide-eyed grinning Bill having Quite The Time.Bill arrived in New York City about 19 years before I did - and I thoroughly loved reading his recollections of Living Large On A Shoestring. Like me, he considered the place to be his personal Shangri La -- a glittering metropolis that could still be decorated on a dimestore budget. He snuck into operas, fashion shows, ateliers, invitation-only galas, and ballrooms. He commented it felt "peculiar" to walk in the FRONT entrance of the Waldorf since he had been sneaking in through the Laundry Door all those years. (smile) When he was low (and even hungry) he could always re-boot by witnessing beauty. Midnight walks past store windows would restore his spirit and launch new ideas.Rarely do we get to hear such granular details of the great expectations of a creative mind. He muses about how he came to prize his originality, and how he stayed faithful to his own best ideas, whether they paid the rent or not.A wonderful book - an amazing man.

Really enjoyed this memoir for a number of reasons. First, the fashion-conscious generation of women that it describes, who wouldn't be caught dead in the wrong outfit, has now pretty well faded away. That generation and the times they lived in deserve to be showcased alongside other movements or moments that characterize the Twentieth Century and the book does that extremely well, from Cunningham's unique, insider's perspective. Finally, as someone who likes to think of herself as "creative," Cunningham's creative drive, the intensity and fearlessness with which he pursued his goals, is inspiring. So are the little tidbits of advice for anyone seeking his or her own creative path which run through the book.

Even before the book was published I had read a brief summary I think in The New York Times and at first was disappointed that the book would not cover up to most recent events in Bill Cunningham's life and the fashion world. But once I read it boy was I glad it didn't because through the very time distance it brings across the past even more intensively.Bill Cunningham's language is a very pleasure to read, and if you have a thing for language, as I do, you'll surely enjoy the sometimes old fashioned words, expressions or idioms he uses. The book is an extraordinary read, I frankly had a hard time to put it aside and as a matter of fact it took me only say three or four days to finish it. What I found most fascinating was how Cunningham described the different eras and what it felt like to live the and there.On a personal side it gives you a very close view into Cunningham's view of the world, how he lived his life, and why he did it the way he did. It complements the picture of him you might have from reading his column in The Times, and from other sources, like news articles and the media.I had the pleasure to run into Bill a few times in New York City - he on his bike on street say a year before he passed, and another time earlier at one of the fashion shows at Lincoln Center. On the latter he was chatting with Isabella Blow when I asked him if I could take a picture - as expected he shook his head and turned the other way.This book is a must for people interested in fashion in general and the wonderful person of Bill Cunningham in particular. Beyond that, it shows you how you can find your own way in life, despite - or even - because of supposed adverse circumstances.I am happy the manuscript was discovered in Bill Cunningham's estate that and his family decided to have it published its a winner for all of us.

I am a huge fan of Bill Cunningham. I started this book with such enthusiasm and the first few chapters were a delight. Indeed, when Bill writes about his youth and his hat-making business, he is totally charming. However, the second part of the book, about going to fashion shows and his views style and taste, seems to belong to an entirely different volume. For students of fashion and fashion shows in the sixties, the second half of the book provides detailed and valuable documentation but, for the rest of us, it’s too much of a good thing. In addition, perhaps it was because I read the Kindle edition, there were not a particularly large number of photographs and I, at least, couldn’t find the captions.

I am really enjoying Bill Cunninghams Memoir. He was such a fashion ledge and a great street photographer. I miss his fashion observations that appeared in the NY Times. What a legend! I would highly recommend this to anyone who was a Bill fan!

Bill Cunningham was an excellent photographer with a wise eye for catching the shot. I will always miss his work. Had now idea of his fashion background. What an amazing determination and success. The title certainly added to my enjoyment of a life well lived. I appreciated all the photos and the insight to a talented individual.

Losing him was tragic, but this wonderful book, written in such an authentic voice, is a beautiful insight into a singular talent. I just with there was more of it.

Apparently this is one of the more comprehensive texts on parasites out there, our professor strongly recommended it.I think it is useful, as it contains a lot of information and is organized fairly logically. However, note that some of the information is not 100% up-to-date (for example, better images of parasite life cycles may be found on the CDC website) and it is a LOT of info that is just sort of thrown at you - sometimes hard to absorb. That said, it pretty much tells you everything you need to know about parasites (sometimes more than you need) and, given that it's intended as a textbook, is really not bad. Plus a lot of this information is not very easily available on the internet so you need a book.

Would not purchase this item. Tf you do and it is not what you want you will have to pay for shipping.

Bought this book for my helminthology class because I saw that the instructor referred to it. Great acquisition. I also recommend Despommier's 4th edition Parasitic Diseases.

The binding was torn, but the book is still together. Other than that it was a good book for my class.
