The Cursed Series by Rebecca Donovan is one readers don’t want to miss. The release of Part 1 and Part 2 are taking the reading and blogger world by storm. All who have read the book are praising the series and begging for the next two installments, myself included. This series grabbed my attention within the first few pages and held me captive through both parts. Although this series is considered mature YA geared for the 16 and up age group, I think this series steps out of it’s “specified genre”. It will appeal to all readers because of it’s mature content mixed with intrigue, mystery, and romance while still capturing the freshness of youthful optimism. The writing is superb. The plot is delivered in an interesting and subtle way by blending two worlds together in an unique way. The main characters are defined by their strongest virtue which is also their biggest weakness and flaw. Their personal curse is what propels and defines each of their roles within this story.Pay attention to the headers at the beginning of each chapter in both Part One and Part Two. Part One is the perspective from Lana’s grandmother. Part two is from a fairytale story. All of these chapter headers propel the story in a new direction.Part One – If I’d KnownThe readers are introduced to Lana, the narrator of The Cursed series. Lana has been brought up to believe that virtues are the curses that destroy lives. She’s the only child of a single mother who conceived her at a young age. They were abandoned by the baby daddy before she was born. Her mother has spent her life searching for love and happily ever after. Her search has left Lana somewhat emotionally neglected. Lana was mostly raised by her grandmother until she passed away. Her life experiences have taught her that virtues are the downfall for everyone she has loved. She has witnessed Belief, Trust, Kindness, and Boldness destroy those she holds dear.Lana has been brought up in the rougher side of a small city in Massachusetts. It’s obvious that Lana and her friends have had to grow up fast and learn street smarts in order to survive. Although they are one step away from crossing the line to the darker side, they have each other’s backs and protect each other no matter what. In a sense they all know they will cross the line at some point. It’s just a matter of when or how. Loyalty to each other is how they survive in their world.Lana’s biggest problem is her virtue. Her virtue is absolute “HONESTY”. She cannot lie no matter how much it can hurt someone else or herself. This is what leads her to her demise ( Part 2) when she is in the wrong place at the wrong time and very bad, unspeakable things happen that could destroy them all. Rather than lie about what happened she chooses silence and takes the punishment.Part Two – Knowing YouInstead of being convicted and sent to Juvenile Detention, Lana is sent to Blackwood,an exclusive correctional boarding school for troubled rich kids. Rather than punishing the troubled students, they are managed and guided to make better life choices. The students are cut off from social media, technology, and the outside world. Their time is managed to fit their personal needs for improvement in all aspects of their lives including academic weaknesses to personality flaws. They are all required to work to pay back restitution for the damages they have done prior to coming to Blackwood.Lana arrived at Blackwood at the beginning of the summer session. There are very few students on campus. The students that are attending quickly become her tribe although she doesn’t really trust any of them. They all work at the local country club and socialize with the other kids from town working there. Lana quickly realizes that although these kids are from privileged backgrounds they are all basically the same. They are all defined by their Virtue.Lana becomes a part of the Blackwood life even though she misses her friends from her old life. She is learning that people are people no matter where she goes. There are good and bad things everywhere. She still doesn’t trust easily but she is also learning life lessons about the true meaning of love and friendship. Things seem good on the surface but she is getting threatening notes that are escalating into something sinister and dangerous. As the threats escalate it becomes apparent that her past world is connected to her new world. It may not be the VIRTUE that destroys her. Two worlds are colliding. Virtues are colliding. Her life is spiraling out of control.CLIFFHANGER!Rebecca Donovan knocked it out of the park with the Cursed Series. She delivered an enthralling story that readers cannot get enough of. I highly recommend this series!

OMG!!! I’m not going to lie. I spent so much time going back and rereading parts because I was confused about what was happening. Pay attention and don’t get lost. This book is amazing. So many plot twists. That ending though.OMG!!!! That ENDING 😱😱😱Rebecca did amazing on this and I’m so excited that I got to read this. This book was enthralling.

The cover caught my eye and the story drew me in. Wow! Can I have Parts 3 & 4 now? Cause, wow! I had a hard time putting this book down. Suspense, mystery, and twists I never saw coming kept me up late reading. Rebecca Donovan has written a beautiful story. The characters have depth and dimension. Bringing real emotion into the story.I will be having a serious book hangover. Join me in having one and read The Cured Parts 1& 2. I recommend it.

Went in blind not knowing anything about the story of the author. Have to say the ride was bumpy. In book one getting to know Lana Peri, a little young feisty girl who loves with her whole self (mind, body, & soul). She finds herself in more difficult situations which carry over into book two. More characters and culprits are introduced and than bam! She leaves you hanging until God knows when the next book is due out! Shit!

This was my first Rebecca Donovan read and I am seriously impressed. From the beginning your attention is grasped. What an intense ride, there were quite a few moments where I was on the edge of my seat. This unique story takes you on quite the roller coaster. I can not wait for the rest of this story. ABSOLUTELY a must read!!!

It felt like a watt pad story. I felt like it lacked potential and story when you read further on. I’m sorry. I could not finish it. That would be too much. I just wished this book was more fun.

This book kept me on my toes! I can't wait for parts 3&4! It's a great book and she does an amazing job!

Mystery novels and even series are available at every turn, so I look for stories with memorable characters, locales that have a true sense of place, or settings that give a unique sense of a time - and Reeve has done a nice job with all three in this very nice debut novel. She clearly lived the life of a young associate in a large law firm (even in slightly more laid back Seattle), giving the characters depth as they navigate both plot development but also the more meta mystery that is life as a young professional in his or her first job.The mystery itsef twists in a number of entertaining and non-formulaic directions, which was fun, introducing a number of enjoyable side characters along the way. The ending was enough of a surprise to be interesting, while not feeling too much like a Scooby-Doo style reveal, which is appreciated in a mystery series. Finally, while I didn’t feel I was given enough to see Harmony as a fully fleshed out character, I enjoyed the development of Jack as a protagonist. I appreciate character details that allow the fictional creation be something more than just a vessel to step through the plot, and she has let those details emerge with Jack without being distracting. And I do love the fact that a dog gets the chance to be a fully developed character until herself.I will most definitely look forward to the continued unfolding of these characters in subsequent novels..

One can close one's eyes and easily imagine Rosemary Reeve writing chapters of Jack Hart mysteries for the 1990's Seattle analog of the 1890's London Strand magazine, keeping subscribers on tenterhook with each issue. The style is different from Conan Doyle's, of course: Reeve's writing is more descriptive and lyrical, her characters are more complex and higher dimensional, and as an attorney herself, she is able to write more authentically in Jack's world and with his voice. Both Holmes and Hart are hugely enjoyable. I eagerly await the next installment.

This is a great read. It is a well woven plot, fast moving and exciting. I could not put it down.I am definitely looking forward to more books from Rosemary Reeve.

I could recommend this to anyone. It is clean, full of adventure, scary, and comical. You will love the characters, the mystery and keep turning pages for more!Well done Rosemary! When I heard you were a writer I could not wait to buy book 1, now that I have read it, I can't wait to read your other books!

Ms. Reeve's characters, both human and canine, unfold in satisfying depth and humanity in this legal thriller. Her story telling is engaging and her weaving of legal facts with fast-paced action make this a truly enjoyable page-turner. I look forward to the next installment!

This is a page turner and I couldn't put it down! Rosemary Reeve has written an incredibly smart, fascinating and riveting mystery. It's intriguing and fast paced - feels like you are right there with Jack Hart in the legal world. I highly recommend this book and am eager for the next in the series.

Love the plot, catches you from the first page. The characters are so vividly crafted that they very shortly become your friends. Can’t get enough of Betsy and will miss as her

A well mystery. It's believable. Steady progress on the plot. Kept my attention and kept me guessing. Thorough wrap up.

From the Inside Flap

Glitteringly detailed and engagingly written, the magisterial Elizabeth I" brings to vivid life the golden age of sixteenth-century England and the uniquely fascinating monarch who presided over it. A woman of intellect and presence, Elizabeth was the object of extravagant adoration by her contemporaries. She firmly believed in the divine providence of her sovereignty and exercised supreme authority over the intrigue-laden Tudor court and Elizabethan England at large. Brilliant, mercurial, seductive, and maddening, an inspiration to artists and adventurers and the subject of vicious speculation over her choice not to marry, Elizabeth became the most powerful ruler of her time. Anne Somerset has immortalized her in this splendidly illuminating account.

One of the best biographers I have come across. The author tells the blow by blow of Elizabeth's life with a minimum of analysis and judgement. Most biographers put too much of themselves into the book. I often feel herded this way and that as the author overlays the life with their idea of their subject. In the case of this book, Somerset does a splendid job in telling what was and leaving the judgment to me. I even wish she had said more in assessing Elizabeth's legacy. There was very little in that way. But I can't fault her for writing the book she wanted to write. Overall it's really a good biography, although it was so dense it took me quite a while to finish it - almost a week! A really fine book.

If all that you know of Elizabeth I is what you know from Cate Blanchett's two movies, then you know nothing. Even if you learned that Sir Francis Walsingham was her advisor and Sir Walter Raleigh was her friend. In high school I got an "A" in world history, and in college I earned a minor degree in history. So, literally, I can convey SOMETHING about the Virgin Queen. Like me, she had red hair, and Sir Francis Drake was her champion. And before reading ELIZABETH I, I could have told you that Elizabeth was human and that she was imperfect and she made many mistakes.Still I did not know HER. So, like movie watchers, I knew nothing. For me, Anne Somerset's supreme achievement was to teach me the SPECIFICS of the first Queen Elizabeth's humanness. She brought this lofty person down to earth. As I read Elizabeth's story, her image as a great person of history disintegrated and she became just a person. But she remains close to heart. Please do not misunderstand. This lengthy, though easy-to-read biography is not a psychological treatise. Actually it reads pretty much like fiction. Bloody Mary serves as a villainess. Mary Queen of Scots provides intrigue. Sir Francis Drake leads us to adventure. The Spanish Armada injects suspense. The impulsive arrogance of Lord Exeter makes us shake our heads with admonition. And Elizabeth herself emulates Shakespeare by exiting the material plane with pathos.God save the Queen!Extras: Family tree showing descendants of Henry VII (Elizabeth's grandfather), sixteen photographic plates of period drawings and portraits, hundreds of footnotes, hundreds of bibliographic entries, index with detailed subtopics. Maps would have been helpful, but there were none.

For most of this book, I was wondering what it was about Elizabeth I that made her so famous through the centuries. The legend of Gloriana and her Golden Age were nowhere to be seen in the detailed descriptions of marriage negotiations, her hesitant and lukewarm foreign assistance, or her being duped by the French king. Where were the sweeping reforms and brilliant handling of foreign and domestic affairs that would surely characterize the reign of such a remarkable woman? It wasn’t until the last six pages of the book, when Somerset assesses Elizabeth’s reign, that her true achievements finally emerge. Her success was not in grand events, but in the stability and prosperity she brought to her kingdom. Elizabeth kept England out of costly foreign entanglements. She maintained the overall peace at a time when other monarchs faced rebellion and civil war. She restored national confidence and international prestige. She established a national church that would have broad appeal. She upheld the interests of the crown without encroaching on the interests of her subjects.Somerset offers a detailed and informative portrait of Elizabeth that at times defends decisions and rationales while at others describes her in unflattering terms. When Elizabeth expressed anger, she “shrieked” and “screamed,” words which undermine any reasonable basis for her opinion. Fortunately, these instances are rare and readers are more often treated to descriptions of the various conundrums Elizabeth faced: her personal feelings toward marriage and the pressure to marry; the problems arising no matter who the lucky man was, English or foreign; the pressure to name a successor; how to deal with Mary Stuart; powerful continental enemies who could overwhelm England if provoked, the rise of Puritanism. And these were after her accession. Prior to that, Elizabeth walked a tightrope for survival under both her siblings, her wits and courage all that kept her alive.Elizabeth was blessed with extraordinary luck throughout her reign, but Somerset points out that she took advantage of that luck. Her councilors were instrumental to the running of the kingdom, but she was the one who appointed them. Elizabeth’s military strategies were often sound; the problem was that her generals failed to follow them.Elizabeth I comes across as a woman who ruled on her own terms, and quite competently, at a time when women were not seen as capable of effective leadership. If the achievements of her reign were more quiet than dramatic, they are no less remarkable.

Four stars hardly seems fair given the amount of research that must have gone into this book, but the detail can be overwhelming. It is well organized and well written, but as another reviewer opined, this is not a light read. I would suggest this book for dedicated fans of Elizabeth and her era. For one, such as myself, with only a passing curiosity for her and her times, this may have been too much.

A very complete resource concerning the life and times of Queen Elizabeth. It was a complicated time in England's royal history when Elizabeth was made their Queen. Ms. Somerset's pages are very FULL of readable information even with lots of historical facts. Her book still is a very readable and writes a well told story. All of Henry VIII's many marriages caused many difficulties as to royal succession and the author is very well organized as to royal possibilities. .
