From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–This book addressed to evangelical Christian teens is written in a flippant, smart-aleck, "too cool for school" voice that undercuts the importance of the information it imparts. Lookadoo explains why oral sex is, indeed, sex, and explores a number of common myths, e.g., condoms prevent pregnancy and diseases. Generalizations are frequent–e.g., a teen father will abandon the pregnant girl. Some of the data is documented, but the author frequently cites his own interviews with teens. He portrays homosexuality as a matter of personal choice. "Then there is the 'I was born gay' argument. Well, poop on that," he writes, before getting tangled up in an oversimplified discussion of the role of genetics in both gays and convicts. As the book progresses, Lookadoo includes an increasing number of biblical references and offers a chapter counseling teens who have been sexually active and now want to become abstinent to turn to God. The book is laid out in punchy, bold graphics that are visually exciting but not particularly original. Fictionalized scenarios and dialogue appear frequently, both in the text and in sidebars. Eleanor Ayer's It's Okay to Say No: Choosing Sexual Abstinence (Rosen, 2000) presents a strong case for abstinence and includes none of the religious references that make Lookadoo's book particularly problematic for public-school collections.–Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The description, title, and cover are all misleading. This book conveys the idea that sex is evil and only married couples, woman and man, should have sex.I do not know why this author or anyone else believes this could be a useful book to teens experiencing current day reality, let alone anyone. It lacks valid statistics and helpful information about sex, and layers guilt onto those who have experienced normal feelings and ideas about sex.Do not buy it for yourself, but most importantly, do not give this to kids.

Excellent book for boys. Straight up plain talk. I bought this book and left it sitting in his room. He claims he isn't reading it but by the worn pages I can see he has!

This is an amazing book! I bought several copies and handed them out to my entire 12th grade Sunday School class. This book has great life-lessons that children who are graduating high school should know.

This is an awesome book to play a drinking game with, and a horrible book to educate anyone on sex.Every time the author Justin Lookadoo says something sexist or writes an incorrect fact, take a shot. I promise that by page 7 you will be absolutely wasted out of your mind. There are so many gems in this book, I really don't know where to begin. There's the quiz "Should You Have Sex?" which completely disregards if you love or trust the person. Apparently the only way you can win this quiz is if you answer "yes" to being married for 10,000 points where all the other questions in the quiz are worth 1 point. Then there's the amazing section "Are You Gay?" where Justin talks about "the gay doctors - you know the scientists who study homosexuality", then as predicted he compares a woman's virginity to a shiny car. As in - do you want to buy a shiny car? Or a banged-up used one?Anyway I digress. I give this book 5 stars because it not only provides great drinking games, but it can be used as kindling to start fires, or if you've run out of toilet paper.

This book is horrible, it spreads misinformation and inaccurate statistics. I'd like to think that misrepresenting facts is wrong, regardless of your ideology. For example, he says that the Department of Health and Human Services says that "THERE IS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO PROVE CONDOM PROTECTION AGAINST STDs." when in reality they say "Latex condoms significantly reduce your risk of getting most STDs, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), if you use them correctly every time." ([...]) This is dangerous, he's telling teenagers information that will discourage them from using life-saving protection. He's also lying about their effectiveness at preventing pregnancy, saying they have a 85% success rate each time they are used (assuming perfect use). In reality, they have a 98% success rate over a year in sexually active couples ([...]). Nothing in this book can be trusted.

My husband and I are youth sponsors at our church. My husband is also a high school teacher and I taught before becoming a stay at home mom. We consider ourselves "in the know" when it comes to what teens are talking about. This book is raw. It is real. It is written by a Christian with Christian perspectives. I recommend parents reading it. You'll be shocked by the content but realize it is nothing less than what your teens are constanly being bombarded with in the locker rooms, at school, in their teen magazines, and of course on TV. Only difference (and a big huge one that matters) is that this book explains everything in a Christian perspective and even has a chapter on getting right with God. Read it then have your teens read it. They'll get the Truth (God's truth) on the issues that most adults are too afraid to address.

Many of the figures quoted in this book about success rates of birth control and the like are in error. While abstaining from sex is the only fool-proof birth control method, giving teens incorrect information will make them doubt the usefulness of protection even if they do decide to have sex, creating a dangerous situation for all involved.

Amazon.com Review

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor (and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and related conditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these terms sound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions. Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss many of the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical and occupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting to living with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive. This is also the RSI book if youÂ’re looking for information on the psychological ramifications of RSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office.

From Publishers Weekly

In this highly instructive and readable guide to health in the age of computers, Pascarelli, professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University and Cornell Medical Center, and Quilter, a health writer, explore the causes, symptoms and treatments of varied injuries stemming from prolonged computer keyboard work. RSI (repetitive strain injury) is the authors' catchword for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tendinitis, epycondylitis (also called tennis elbow) and a slew of other potentially chronic conditions that render not just computer work but also driving, washing dishes, holding a phone and opening a book difficult, if not agonizing. The authors identify the factors contributing to RSI; emphasize preventive measures, such as upper-body exercises, stretches and the pacing of keyboard work; and insist that finding the right professional diagnosis and treatment is the basis for recovery. They also include names of RSI support groups, ergonomic catalogues and on-line newsgroups. Each chapter offers personal exercises and checklists along with countless anecdotes from commiserating RSI sufferers. If some readers find this work somewhat repetitive and alarmist--all too ready to proclaim RSI "the occupational epidemic of the '90s" and to attribute it to overly demanding office productivity standards--most will find it a consoling trove of practical advice. This gives you a pretty easy-to-understand explanation of common RSI issues and what you can do about them. Despite being rather old this still seems to be one of the go-to texts (surely demonstrating how little is known about RSI, still).I think the authors strike the right balance here -- they say, yes, your problem is serious and could lead to disability if not addressed, but they also give a calm explanation and show how all but the most far-gone cases can be addressed with time. It was incredibly empowering to read this after visiting a general practitioner, being told I had carpal tunnel (despite my symptoms not resembling carpal tunnel at all), and essentially being brushed off. This book encouraged me to get physical and occupational therapy which has done a lot to help me improve, but the book gave me important background knowledge to help me understand what was happening to me.

"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years.

My physical therapist recommended reading this book and I absolutely loved it! If you have them assig my physical therapist recommended reading this book and I absolutely loved it! If you have RSI, this book will help you a lot.

It helped me cope with my carpal tunnel syndrome, I am still dealing with it but there is hope with some Physical Therapy.

Comprehensive information about RSI for a lay-person.

This book is the single most useful collection of practical RSI information I've found. Highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out how to stop hurting themselves when they're working. I have bought four copies for friends.

Frustrating how it keeps recommending that you find a doctor, while acknowledging that doctors don't really know what to do with RSI.

extremely helpful!! you must buy ASAP if you have an RSI!!!!! regular doctors misdiagnose rsi's causing extra months/years of pain!!
