Not the best of Badacci's novels, this murder mystery which takes place in and around the US Supreme Court has a rather convoluted plot. Michael Fisk, a gifted young lawyer and US Supreme Court clerk, is murdered in what is made to look like a robbery. His estranged brother John, a criminal defense lawyer and former cop, decides he will aid the police in solving the crime. From this point forward the story involves politicians, convicts, CIA agents, FBI agents, police, Supreme Court security officers, Supreme Court justices and many others leading to a not very climactic end. I was disappointed, as the conspiracy unfolded, that the cause of the initial and subsequent murders did not carry the weight of the ensuing carnage. In that regard the story seemed out of balance for me and the plot felt forced. Otherwise, the book is entertaining and the characters are interesting and relatable.

Baldacci never disappoints. Learning about the inner workings of the Supreme Court was eye-opening. He takes his time developing characters so the reader can 'inhabit' them for a while. Meeting Rufus, who has spent 25 years in prison for something he didn't really do reminds us that we have that same situation today. Crimes in the military and among the powerful are also part of our daily landscape. That Baldacci wrote this so long ago (not much use of technology like cell phones) should tell us how well he studies the times in order to show us our future. OR he knows that people just don't change - only the times do! I am a voracious reader, and I've found that many of the newer crime/thriller authors can't quite measure up to David Baldacci.

I've read every Balldacci novel and short. I have only had iffy feelings over one other.Every one the I've read took a day and a half. This took three weeks I kept it down and reading something else. The story was so loaded with character I confused two with one another and Dellasandro was not well enough expanded in the beginning to retain who exactly he was.Secondly I heartilly dilike John Fiske I was actually swimming to believe he's killed his brother. Then tonight I finally had 183 pages and picked up.The v ending quarter was beyond much he's writhen the b last couple b of b guests I daughters up until just now to finish it. Too bad the last three pages were added, they weren't needed and I just couldn't buyt the making peaceSo in short the b book is v week eyetooth if you Ike many charters I usually don't mind them if the author can keep I then straight. The end is Baldacci at his best. While he's still one b of my favorite withers and I'm pick up his next. This one is one of two I won't reread.Sorry, David, if you're reading this, I was disappointed.

Mr. Baldacci just can't help himself. He has woven another heart stopping never slowing story that kept me reading. I seem to always finish his books just a little too fast. Sorry he is that good.

The book explores the inner working of the US Supreme Court and the Us Military in a very timely fashion. The discussion of the Court is probably closer to the true operation and political wrangling than one would see in the press. The most recent conflict over a judge appointment makes this discussion most relevant.Give this book a try..

Rufus Harms was serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. Not so unusual for a black man in America, but the people arrayed against him were formidable and would stop at nothing to stop the truth from coming out. Actions of a few more than twenty five years before, will set in motion elements that would lead to a judicial upheaval. The mighty will fall and the righteous will prevail but not without great loss. Hang on this road will be bumpy.

This is a truly enjoyable novel from the very-talented David Baldacci. Michael Fiske, a highly-respected clerk at the Supreme Court, is murdered, and his somewhat estranged brother John, a struggling defense attorney and former cop, tries to help the police locate the killer. When the FBI gets involved, the agent in charge seems hellbent on framing John for it. Add to this some very interesting behind-the-scenes Supreme Court machinations, and one of the most unforeseen plot twists I've ever read, and you've got a helluva good novel in your hands!

Not being a fan of legal dramas – finding too much courtroom jargon boring and convoluted – I was inclined at the beginning to think I had chosen wrongly, even to the extent of putting the book down. However I am thankful I persisted. While the first couple of chapters are a bit long winded, they contain much that adds depth and understanding to the characters and the plot as it evolves. The action and the twists and surprises are in typical Baldacci style and this saga is as good as any of his best.
