I looked through all the treasure hunting books after my daughter mentioned an interest in the subject. This one looked really great. I spent about twenty minutes studying it before I wrapped it up to give to my highly successful, detail orientated, bean counter daughter, for Christmas. It must be a great book because it's been over a month and she still won't lend it to me to read. I followed the same strategy with her husband, giving him a book on sunken ships. I expect them both to escape their successful lives any day now and run off in search of pirate gold. The book has proved itself to be an excellent choice!

Good quality Thank you

Great book, I enjoyed it. Found it to be interesting and filled with useful history and data. Makes for a good read.

The World's Richest Wrecks: A Wreck Diver's Guide to Gold and Silver Treasures of the Seas I have read several treasure/underwater discovery related books written by Robert & Jennifer Marx over the years, and have found them to be not just great reading but full of incredible historic detail, vital for the modern day adventurer. This latest book "The World's Richest Wrecks" is no exception, and will get many people out of their chairs and into the water!

Makes me wish I had a mini-submarine. Interesting book.

Great story about treasure salvage

a fun read

I have been scuba diving for almost 40 years with a passion for shipwrecks to equal any. Many years ago I purchased a very expensive underwater metal detector and went in search of the missing treasure from a Spanish Galleon wreck site. I later visited another well-documented site in Wales where gold coins are still being washed ashore - and on both occasions found nothing but heartache and disappointment. These rather primitive efforts, however, are nothing when compared to some of the legendary treasure FINDERS - many of whom had lost all the important things in their lives (wife, family, house, respect!) and were in considerable debt before finally striking pay-dirt. Those who were not successful are, of course, long forgotten even if their debts are not! The reason for such obsession is explained by the first eight words in this book which read; “Treasure fever is an acute and incurable condition.” Of course, there are no quick fixes and virtually no fabulous treasure ships or other hoards exist which are not already well known to, and well researched by, several other people. Such pessimistic thoughts, however, never prevented Robert Marx from seeking his own dreams and, today, both his exploits, successes and occasional controversial methods appear to be legendary in certain quarters. My problems with the book, however, began just as soon as I read the short bio on the back cover where the author refers to himself as ‘Sir’ Robert Marx – claiming to have been knighted in three European countries – but surely that would be Sir, Sir, Sir, but I digress!!! That truly exceptional feat is neither explained nor expanded upon anywhere in the book and is one which, to my knowledge, has never been extended to any, for example, US President. Consequently, I found it difficult to accept anything written by someone who makes such claims without providing the obligatory supporting information. Many countries (including Britain) occasionally award their highest honours to foreigners. In the case of a ‘Knighthood’ (often awarded to US Ambassadors to London), the recipients are not allowed to call themselves ‘Sir’ unless and until they become British citizens. With Robert Marx being a US citizen he remains plain Mister. Some might suggest I am being unduly picky-picky but, in the UK and elsewhere in Europe such things are important. Of more relevance, as a shipwreck historian, I need to be able to trust ALL the information given in any work and, just as I would distrust anyone falsely claiming to be a Doctor, so I found myself unable to believe a great deal of the content of this work. And that is a real SHAME.Divided under two main headings of Part One: New World (with 14 chapters) and Part Two: Old World (15 chapters), the book is well laid out and easy to follow as the reader is taken on a whistle-stop tour of some of the greatest treasure shipwrecks of all time. And when I say ‘whistle-stop’ I mean brief. Part One commences with; Introduction to New Word shipwrecks and is followed by chapters on the ‘Richest Wrecks’ of; Canada, Florida, US East Coast, US West Coast, Bermuda, Bahamas, Mexico, Central America, Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, Spanish Main, South America East Coast and finally South America West Coast. Part Two commences with another introduction followed by chapters on the same theme for; The British Isles, Spain, Europe, Azores, Atlantic, Africa, South Africa, Indian Ocean, India, Indonesia, Far East, Philippines, Australia and finally the Pacific Ocean. There is a useful Bibliography but NO Index at all.If, therefore, you are looking for general information relating to a specific wreck - Atocha or Girona, for example, you will have to wade through the entire work in order to find that information unless you already know where to commence your search - i.e. the Atocha comes under Chapter 3 Florida’s Richest Shipwrecks and the Girona forms a miniscule part of Chapter 16 and is particularly disappointing. Apart from a short appraisal of the discovery of the Mary Rose in which Marx fails to mention the person who actually discovered the wreck - Alexander McKee, the British Isles is no more than a list of ships by years from 1467 to 1859 in which these important treasure ships are afforded four lines of generalisation. I was left with the impression that if ‘Mr’ Marx hadn’t discovered the wreck he did not regard it as very important…NM

I was really looking forward to reading this book but I read about 100 pages and put it down in frustration. It perhaps needs a better and more forceful editor because the author can't seem to decided if she want to write a flowery novel or an informative and topical book. She uses phases that make no sense and distract from the points she is trying to make. For example on Page 55 the end of the paragraph reads: "But the lessons of that day had not yet been fully tallied when fresh answers - or, more modestly, the tenuous glimmers of answers as fragile as a newborn's translucent skin-rose to the surface of the world's attention gliding on scented ribbons of Spanish lavender and vanilla." I expect to see this in a Romance novel not a book on Surveillance Capitalism. By eliminating such indulgences the book could be half the length, more focused and certainly more powerful. I am sure it is an important topic but in the end I did not finish it. I will wait for a more edited version that gets to the point.

As Shoshana Zuboff explains, "This book is about the darkening of the digital dream and its rapid mutation into a voracious and utterly novel commercial project that I call surveillance capitalism."She provides an abundance of information, insights, and counsel that she hopes will help those who read her book to contest and interrupt, then contain and vanquish an unprecedented threat to the human race. "At its core, surveillance capitalism is parasitic and self-referential. It revives Karl Marx's image of capitalism as a vampire that feeds on labor, but with an unexpected turn. Instead of labor, surveillance capitalism feeds on every aspect of every human experience."According to Zuboff, her book documents "a journey to encounter what is strange, original, and even unimaginable in surveillance capitalism. She examines several major organizations -- notably Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft -- that are in various stages of developing a "technologically advanced and increasingly inescapable raw-material-extraction-operation." Her journey's ultimate destination? "Our aim in this book is to discern the laws of surveillance capitalism that animate today's Trojan horses, returning us to age-old questions as they bear down on our lives, our societies, and our civilization."Zuboff carefully explains how and why "surveillance capitalism operates through unprecedented asymmetries in knowledge and the power that accrues to knowledge." The result: "Our lives are scraped and sold to fund the freedom of surveillance capitalists and our subjugation," juxtaposing "their knowledge and our ignorance about what they know." Indeed, they know too much to qualify for freedom. How to respond effectively to the potential dangers of surveillance capitalism, to what she so aptly characterizes as "an overthrow of the people's sovereignty and a prominent force in the perilous drift toward democratic deconsolidation that now threatens Western liberal democracies"? As the material cited in her Notes section clearly indicates (Pages 537-663), Shoshana Zuboff has conducted wide and deep research to support her recommendations. If knowledge has power, and I think it can, those who possess knowledge that has the greatest power will have a decisive competitive advantage over those who do not. Zuboff shares what she has learned from others in order to support what becomes a call to action. In John 8:32, Jesus is quoted as saying, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Sustaining totalitarianism depends on severely limited access to knowledge but first it must be obtained by surveillance. The tone of her book reminds me in some respects of Thomas Paine's Common Sense and Rights of Man. That is, both urge their reader to awaken to a serious danger and defeat it while they can before it is too late. "The Berlin Wall fell for many reasons, but above all it was because the people of East Berlin said, 'No more!' We too can be the authors of many 'great and beautiful' new facts that reclaim the digital future as humanity's home. No more! Let this be our declaration."I am again reminded of two questions attributed to Hillel the Elder: “If not you, who? If not now, when?”

"The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" by Shoshana Zuboff is a considerable writing which contains themes of inequities in the unequal distribution of knowledge and power. These inequities produce threats to human autonomy. There are struggles between individual and group dominance including the infamous groupthink. The concept of groupthink subverts the primacy and freedom of the individual. The author also places a premium on the privacy and individuality of consumers. This aspect of the discussion is proper. There is too much emphasis on economic logic over the need to produce true value for consumers. Great products sell based upon what people truly need. For this reason, basic staple products sold best in the worst of times like the Great Depression. When times are bad, people still need shaving equipment, soap, toothpaste and a whole host of goods related to everyday living. Many economic systems have some form of negation(s). For instance, Gosplan struggled with State planning quotas which tended to be too bureaucratic and burdened with politics and structural inefficiencies. In addition, the Ural Mountains were a natural divide between the more advanced knowledge based economies of communities west of the Urals versus the diverse peoples living east of the Urals.China had great challenges in replicating the economic and educational successes in the coastal areas with inland communities like the yurts. In addition, great flooding and earthquakes posed cataclysmic living disruptions.Overall, "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" by Shoshana Zuboff dissects some of the most criticized aspects of capitalism over the centuries in favor of promoting the common good in global commerce. Our system is not imperfect in every sense. Civil litigation provides consumers with a legal forum to "even the playing field" with business entities. In civil litigation, consumers can challenge hidden fees, unlawful charges, the failure to honor guarantees, undisclosed product problems in operability and many other manufacturing negations or problem sets.

Likely the most important book written in this era. It's frightening. I am at a loss as to how to get this all under control. So glad that my candle is burning down.
