Best existential crisis you'll ever have.

Happened to help change my life, thought I should share.First I have to say that this book is fantastically written. I’ve long been a fan of Exurb1a’s YouTube videos and I’m so glad that I took the time to start reading his books too. I love how well his sense of humour and ability to trigger an existential crisis have translated across both mediums.Consciousness, particularly artificial consciousness, acts as the focal point for these stories. While reading this book, perhaps by complete happenstance, I was introduced to machine learning as an academic pursuit.The powerful feelings of wonder and mystery explored here have quite literally inspired me to jump on this opportunity. “The Fifth Science” has for me become some strange parallel to my career choice in machine learning; while I find the science intriguing, it is the potential and soulfulness (so deeply examined in this book) where I have really discovered my passion.While some might think it a bit silly to draw comparisons between machine learning and consciousness, I do honestly believe it is how we will best learn to understand it. The more complex systems we create, the more questions we will know to ask and subsequently have answers to pursue.Thank you Exurb1a. You helped me realise my love of science-fiction into something more like real-science.Sam.

This is a great book for anyone who likes the sci-fi genre and especially if you want immediate satisfaction given its a collection of short stories rather than a novel. God damn were the first few existential crisis invoking material though. I hate thinking too long on such subjects but these metaphysical and cognitive examinations of the human condition forced me to read through too the end. Unfortunately, not all of the stories herein have happy endings and like I, you may fall asleep feeling a bit empty after a few. However, overall it ends on a slightly more up beat note middling out and ending on an optimistic nihilism of a sort.On the off chance the author every reads this, consciousness isn't all that great a mystery anymore. Cognitive science has about 90% of it lain out I'd say. I still appreciated the ideas behind the book and the subject discussed, but if you'd like to learn a bit more might I point you to "The tell tale brain" by Dr. Ramachandran. You, or anyone else for that matter contemplating the same subject matter, may find it an interesting read.

Recommended for space cowboys, fireflies, enterprising treksters, portal hoppers, hitchhikers, and those who are endlessly browsing the Netflix/Hulu/Prime Sci-fi section for something good (but nothing good is left because you've consumed it all. You're a space glutton. You know you are). This 'verse is for you.Left a warm glow on me after I did the thing to the end. Recommend taking a break after reading episodes for them to sink in--or not. The minimized-psycho-babble-tech method used herein results in faster page-flipping and the most epic story telling.Author is inspiring and sometimes will break the fourth during your journey along the Fifth.

Clever and witty short stories like a bridge to Lucy Dunne but strictly science fiction and all bound together in some way.A very enjoyable read, one where you can pick it up and put it down whenever.There's never enough Exurb1a writing out there

A Reddit comment suggesting exurb1a's Youtube channel led me to this book. And now I've gone and purchased all his other books, because 3/4 in to Fifth Science, and a few videos, too, and I can't get enough. I am a superfan of Asimov, having read the whole Foundation series an embarrassingly many times. Am also a fan of many other sf authors, of short stories in sf and fantasy, and have always dreamed (as perhaps most sf fans have done) of someday writing something in the genre that someone besides myself will read. Exurb1a has inspired me to write more, read more, and that's the best compliment I can think of.

Exurb1a's writing is special. I've never finished a book so fast, I just couldn't put it down! I'm angry that there aren't any more stories to learn more about the great Galactic Human Empire. Captivating. Please write more about this empire! 100,000 years is a massive amount of time and leaves plenty of room for a Fifth Science 2 following a simultaneous timeline with different stories over the same course of time. I hope Exurb1a writes more and more about this universe and this empire, and of course what comes next!

After reading exurb1a's books i always find myself wanting to thank him for creating such a beautiful thing in this world. This collection of fictious short stories are incredible. They all take place in the same, wonderfully developed, futuristic universe. Every story is creative, powerful, and together make something marvelous. Love this one. Great job. Please keep writing and i will always keep reading.

This book is worth your time and attention. I am so glad that I have it in hardback because I will keep it forever and reread it regularly; I am finished reading it and I just want to read it all over again.It is a book about getting through life. It is rich, raw, funny (hilarious, like all Annie Lamott) and written in language so stunning I would have to stop and just read and reread sentences. I feel as though my life has been broken open with a whole new attitude towards prayer, and even more, towards being alive. This is not a religious book at all, but a book for anyone who is spiritually-oriented and maybe especially for those who aren't, because the author writes about prayer in a way that every single person can relate to. This is a book about being real and true and simple and clear and about living a worthwhile life.Don't miss this book.Highly recommended.*****

Anne's book is on our Summer Series reading list at church. So at the last minute, I ordered the Kindle version and began reading Saturday night. The sermon was Sunday morning. For me this book is life changing. Today was my first day utilizing a template inspired from Anne for prayer. I typed my prayer into three categories: Help, Thanks, Wow. Talk about great prayer focus. I can print my prayers and assemble my prayer journal.Some of us are better composing prayer at the keyboard and quite frankly, I believe God doesn't care what method you use to communicate with Him as long as we are in regular communication with Him, that is His hope.

Anne Lamott is one of my favorite authors. My favorites of her books are "Traveling Mercies", and "bird by bird". Anne sticks to the writing style of a mini essay for each chapter and it works well for her. Each new book begins where the last left off. Not in the sense of a sequel but as it follows where Anne is in her life at that particular time and what is the important topic on her mind.Lamott's latest book "Help, Thanks, Wow", is a good book. It has the short chapters and the rambling conversation that I expect from her books. The topic is one that grabbed me at first. I thought, here is a book that is going to simplify prayer and perhaps I will find comfort in it. Perhaps my expectations were too high as I felt that my questions were never answered. I had hoped for a footprint to follow, something more definitive.I still feel that it is a good book and worth taking a look at. However, if you're not familiar with Anne Lamott then this may not be the best of her books to start with.Sorrowfully, in the end I was left unfulfilled and a little bored.

This book was a little disappointing. Granted it did have some good moments through the book but I had a hard time finding a way to connect them together to make sense of of the book. Seemed be more random thoughts than a book.. For a "spiritual"book it has some words that I do not find appropriate. The sad part is the words don't add anything to the book I felt like the writer needed something to jar her readers awake.

I really wanted to like this book, but by the time I reached the end of the 3rd chapter I had given up. I am an intelligent person with 30 years in software development, using many modern tools and languages so the problem is not that I am some "dummy" that can't read between the lines a little. Here are my complaints:1. The Kindle formatting was awful. The bulk of the text appears bold, which is hard to look at. Line spacing between examples and body text is messed up and often non-existent, making it hard to tell sample text from body text. Code comments appear above the line and in the same font as the code itself, cluttering up the examples even more2. There doesn't seem to be any logical progression in topic ordering. If this is a beginning book, it should start with the basics and slowly build, but it doesn't. This problem is also related to the next problem, which is actually the worst of all:3. Terms and syntax are used before they are explained. I lost track of how many times (in the 3rd chapter) I was totally puzzled by an example because it used syntax that hadn't been described yet, or it showed cryptic output from F# whose meaning was not clear and not explained. Again, if this is a beginner book, you have to explain things before using them. A fairly early example solved a problem by using a discriminated unions inside a method with absolutely no explanation of what a discriminated union even was. I would not have know myself what I was looking at had I not already had some exposure to F#.

It's a very good introductory all-around book on F#.

I have enjoyed this book to the point that I purchased both the Kindle version and now the print version. I love how the author takes the reader through a journey of understanding and growing in the Christian faith in the format of a year's worth of correspondence. Letter writing is a lost art for many of us, and this felt like having a mentor sending me a personal notes each aimed at walking me step-by-step through the Christian faith. She starts with beliefs and the basic tenants of the faith and then moves deeper into living like a Christian and on how to grow deeper in your faith. I have referred back to several chapters numerous times as I prepare bible study lessons.I am hoping to use this book with a group of teen girls over the next year, reading one letter each week and then using the three discussion questions the author provides at the end of each letter.Sometimes theology books can make me feel like I need a seminary degree to understand what the author is saying, but not so with this book. It's very accessible and, like I pointed out in the above paragraph, I think it will be a good tool to even use with younger girls.Maybe the author and her pastor husband will someday consider writing a similar book for men. :-)

Jenny McGill did a fantastic job with this discipleship resource. I love the fact that it's written like a letter. It's so relatable and it really adds that human touch. Each letter is short. 1-2 pages long. It's easy to read and easy to understand. After reading advanced copy of the book, I came here and bought a copy. I disciple teenage girls who are swamped with homework. I handed one of my high school students this book to flip through and she loved the length of it. Even though it's short pages, the content is there. I liked the personal reflection questions at the end of each letter. They are good and thoughtful questions – not reading comprehension questions.I am very thankful for this resource. I have enjoyed reading it personally and I look forward to walking alongside younger ladies with this book.

Jenny has written an amazing and helpful resource for women discipling women. Covering subjects from basic Christian doctrine to practical everyday Christian-living, this book is a helpful resource to new believers grow and flourish in their faith. The book can be used in a one-year discovery setting, or person-to-person reading it together. I will encourage and utilize this book in my church as a means to help foster discipleship.

This is the most outstanding resource for mentoring, discipling or just devotions that I have ever come across. I wish I had this book years ago when I was struggling through discipling young girls in their new walk of faith. Back then all I had was a thin pamphlet with 6 weekly lessons. This comprehensive book gives you nearly a full year of weekly lessons to share with your disciples or just to grow in the your own faith. It covers everything a person needs to know about what we believe from the trinity to creation and marriage, how we should live, habits of a Christian from studying to church attendance, and even why bad things happen to good people. Jenny wrote this book as a series of personal letters to the reader to help learn and understand the Christian walk. Each letter addressed in a loving uplifting way, so that the reader cannot help but feel positively admonished to joy and faith. I’ve loved reading this book and know I will keep it in a cherished place to share with others. I am currently mentoring a dear friend and can’t wait to share these lessons with her.

I just finished Jenny McGill's book, Walk With Me: Learning to Love and Follow Jesus. I love the very personal style she chose of a letter from a mentor to her disciple. I particularly liked that every "letter" ends with 3 questions for the disciple to study, contemplate and apply. This book covers the basics of our Christian belief, how to live as a Christian, the habits of a Christian and how to study the Bible as a Christian. Jenny provides plenty of scriptural references for each topic, addresses tough questions and gives lots of good resource materials for further study. There is a great need for discipleship in the Church today and this book is an excellent tool for the discipling of women. I highly recommend this book.

This book is full of short, to the point letters that cover the basics of Christianity is a friendly tone that is NOT patronizing. The author occasionally throws in something like "I'm thinking about what your day must be like as you read this letter" and all of the letters read like she truly IS actually thinking of her reader, and caring about them personally, not writing a stilted letter as a way of preaching at people. I really enjoy that this book is clearly written for women (Some letters start of with "sister" or "beauty") but it's not overly feminized...it is just a good solid introduction to the Christian faith is very bite-sized, personal pieces. A great tool for discipling a new believer, they will be able to understand the text easily and there are useful discussion questions to go deeper. AND she might even do this homework...the length of the letters is not intimidating at all.

My favorite new book! heartwarming and encouraging! It brings out your faith in action, because it is a battle. I have known Dr. Jenny McGill over 20 years, and she has been a role model to me. This book in discipling old and new believers in their walk with Christ is a must read! As she states that; "each believer is connected to each other in this amazing design of God's presence around the world, (McGill, 2018)." This book does not cover every aspect of the IBC and will sometimes refer you back to the IBC book.I purchased this book for the VA home improvement exam and had a few questions that were not covered in this manual. However, I am still very happy with this purchase.

I bought this to study for the ARE with, and it is great for that, but I will benefit from this study for years to come. As a young architect without a lot of guidance in how code works or why it is written the way it is, this book has established a stronger foundation for me in applying the IBC. I have some experience applying code, but it often felt like stabbing in the dark since I'm fairly inexperienced. Though not a replacement for experience, it will help you get started on the right foot. I'd recommend this book to all young architects coming out of school.

Anyone in the Architectural field should have this book.
