I first discovered William W. Forgey's book Wilderness Medicine : Beyond First Aid at my local library in the nineties. I loved it so much, I bought one. This new edition features crucial updates including an updated list of items that go into a pack and website links to keep you up to date in future. It also served as a reminder that I need to refresh my First Aid training:)Like previous editions, this is a must read for those planning to venture into the wilderness areas where it may take hours or even days to get an injured team member to help. Dr. Forgey covers all the basics, from CPR to simple wound treatment but I don't feel that this book, nor any other, is a substitute for in-person training. The information in this book is all the more valuable once a rudimentary understanding of First Aid is established. He then guides readers through the more advanced techniques needed for more complex situations. I have truthfully never used any First Aid methods beyond applying bandages or blister dressings but it's good to know that I have the information if needed.I especially like the way the Appendix is segmented in order to logically approach preparations needed the trip at hand. If one is venturing out for a day hike on a well-traversed trail, then a few simple items will suffice and these are covered. On the other hand if the trip is for weeks to the Canadian wilderness then different preparations are necessary. Each situation is covered and Dr. Forgey also reminds us that the preparations needed depend on the skill level and experience of the team.I am so glad I made this purchase. Thank you once again Dr. Forgey!

This is the sevent edition of Dr. Forgey's book, and is the third edition I have owned. Dr. Forgey's book should have a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in practical prehospital first aid and medical treatment in wilderness or disaster/survival situations. While Dr. Forgey does provide meaningful explanation of many injuries and conditions, his primary focus is on the correct diagnosis and treatment of injuries and conditions, at least to the extent possible under austere conditions. The Seventh Edition does contain enough new information and edits to old sections to be worth buying if you have the last edition. Finally, while this book would serve well as a single reference or source of information, I recommend anyone seriously interested combine it with two other books, first, either the WMS/AAOS "Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care in Remote Locations" or "NOLS Wilderness Medicine" and Auerbach's "Medicine for the Outdoors". Dr. Forgey's book is in between these books. The WMS and NOLS books give a better foundation than Forgey does for patient assessment. Forgey, however, takes the range of conditions and injuries and the depth of treatment beyond either of them. Auerbach provides a much deeper dive and is a useful backup of knowledge for all of the mentioned books. Finally, the other book worth mentioning is "Medicine for Mountaineering"...the latest edition of which is now somewhat dated, but which does provide depth and excellent discussions of the mechanism of injury or disease process in addition to treatment. FWIW, in preparation for a recent WFR certification I read this book and the WMS book, and I found the preparation made the class much easier.

I had the 6th edition which was great and I was pleased to find out that there was a newer 7th edition. I used the list of medicines to show my doctor to get prescriptions - he said the list was very complete and saved a lot of time/effort determining what to prescribe. We will be on an extended multiyear cruise in very remote ares, which necessitates being prepared for medical situations - this book is great for that.

Great reference

Very practical knowledge for the wilderness. I'm an EMT and Ski Patroller, and will put more of these ideas into my work.

Excellent read and very practical for those of us who often travel to remote areas.I would highly recommend it.

very nice book

Very informative.

Written at a high school level, this book allegedly about the 1918 flu finishes its presentation of that pandemic at only the 52% mark, and spends the next 48% taking repeated and thinly veiled swipes at the Trump administration and spouting global warming as the biggest danger facing the world today. Without bothering to explain why, and with only a couple of brief and seemingly unconnected quotes from other authors on the 1918 flu, this author has concluded that climate change is a greater health risk for future pandemics than randomly mutating virus strains, lack of sanitation in third world countries, insufficient funding for vaccine research or any other contributing factor. Same song, different verse. Basically, we've reached the point in non-fiction books where it doesn't really even matter what particular problem we're discussing, there has to be some connection, however tenuous, to climate change thrown into the text for good measure. It's the imprimatur of modern liberal thought. And it's very tiresome. Skip this one, folks. There are at least four other books on the 1918 flu that are more worthy of your time.

The book contains interesting factual information. There is as much, or more, information about the first World War than there is about the epidemic, although the spread of the disease through army camps is an essential element of the epidemic. The author's concluding paragraphs contain some information which one might debate---such as global warming, for instance, that hardly seems relevant.

I heard about this book on Sirius XM channel 124. I pre- ordered a copy. I learned so much about WWI that I had forgotten or just didn’t know, and was surprised how disease can affect the outcomes of war.

Well written and fascinating. And kind of scary.

Any book by Kenneth C Davis is great.Great Book!!

Interesting

More Deadly Than War is a fascinating, informative, and page-turning account of the intersection between the Spanish Flu and World War I. I knew little about both topics and learned so much due to the author's accessible writing and generous inclusion of photos. This book also features an excellent appendix that covers a brief history of disease and medicine in general.I would highly recommend this book to both adults (which I am) and young adults.

Review

“The City of Brass is the best adult fantasy I’ve read since The Name of the Wind. It’s stunning and complex and consuming and fantastic. You must read it.” (Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes)“An opulent masterpiece. Chakraborty’s debut is desire-soaked, intrigue-laced, and rife with so-delicious-you’ll-sink-your-teeth-into-it worldbuilding and equally mesmerizing characters. A must-read.” (Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen)“[The City of Brass] reads like an invitation for readers from Baghdad to Fairbanks to meet across impossibly divergent worlds through the shared language and images of the fantastical.” (New York Times Book Review)“Chakraborty writes a winning heroine in Nahri — flawed but smart and engaging. And her portrayal of the cultural conflicts in the magical city of Daevabad and of Ali’s inner turmoil is compelling and complex, serving as a strong counterpoint to the thrilling action.” (Washington Post)“Chakraborty’s debut dazzles...The City of Brass takes readers on an emotional roller-coaster, leaving them with an open ending that will have them desperate for the follow-up. Majestic and magical.” (Shelf Awareness (starred review))“Against [a] syncretic yet nonderivative and totally credible backdrop, Chakraborty has constructed a compelling yarn...culminating in a cataclysmic showdown that few readers will anticipate....Best of all, the narrative feels rounded and complete yet poised to deliver still more. Highly impressive and exceptionally promising.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“This lyrical historical fantasy debut brings to vivid life the ancient mythological traditions of an Islamic world...Chakraborty’s grasp of Middle Eastern history, folklore, and culture inspires a swiftly moving plot, richly drawn characters, and a beautifully constructed world that will entrance fantasy aficionados.” (Library Journal (starred review))“The City of Brass is more than a promising debut — it beguiles all the way...Chakraborty’s research and imagination are equally strong, and she deftly sets up a rich world — and ample suspense — for the rest of this trilogy.” (Vulture (The Ten Best Fantasy Books of 2017))“It’s hard to describe just how gorgeous and intricate this fantasy novel is.” (SYFY Wire)“The City of Brass is a mesmerizing fantasy tale of magic and intrigue that showcases the very best that the fantasy genre has to offer...a superbly written, lush fantasy story that deserves to be at the top of your to-read list.” (Hypable)

From the Back Cover

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of eighteenth-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing—are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs. For Dara tells Nahri an extraordinary tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire and rivers where the mythical marid sleep, past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises and mountains where the circling birds of prey are more than what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass—a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound. In Daevabad, within gilded brass walls laced with enchantments and behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments run deep. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, her arrival threatens to ignite a war that has been simmering for centuries. Spurning Dara’s warning of the treachery surrounding her, she embarks on a hesitant friendship with Alizayd, an idealistic prince who dreams of revolutionizing his father’s corrupt regime. All too soon, Nahri learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences. After all, there is a reason they say to be careful what you wish for . . .

For fans of mythology, fantasy, and historical fiction, this is a great read. It took me awhile to get into it fully because I'm not a big fan of action packed road trips (which made up a fair sized portion of the beginning of the book), but once the story got to where it was going and the two pov characters met, I became hooked. However, unlike in the summery amazon gives for this novel, the Suleiman mentioned is not Sultan Suleiman I "the Magnificent" of the Ottoman Empire, but the prophet Suleiman, also known as Solomon. As disappointed as I was to figure this out, and no matter how little it related to "A Song of Ice and Fire"/"Game of Thrones," also unlike their description, it was a very enjoyable read and I found I couldn't put it down once I was about a third of the way through. Chakraborty makes the world she writes about come alive with a well fleshed out fictional history of the civilization and characters she created, and the political intrigues running through the book make each chapter ending a true cliffhanger.

What a fantastic debut novel. I expect this will be on many awards lists next year. I will certainly nominate it.Two things really leap out at me. First, the world-building is superb. The author is very good at showing, not telling, and there is a lot of mystery hinted as there is a great deal the characters themselves do not know about how the world works. It seems marids are as mysterious to djinn as djinn initially are to the reader. I am really looking forward to learning more in the next book. The Arabian Nights sort of setting is relatively uncommon in fantasy literature, and it's nice to see more writing in that area (a tip of the hat here to Saladin Ahmed's Throne of the Crescent Moon).Second, the characters are fascinating and sympathetic. This is particularly noteworthy as many of the characters are at odds with one another, yet I sympathized with each of them, even when they were in direct conflict! These are complicated, deeply human (in the emotional sense - they are nominally a variety of fantasy races) characters with strengths and weaknesses. They make mistakes, and their current states reflect that, but in each case you can understand why they did what they did. There is one scene where two of the main characters are doing their level best to kill one another. I loved both characters, and couldn't really say that either was in the wrong. That's a difficult task for a novelist to pull off, and a great achievement for a debut novel.

I have been looking forward to this book since it was first announced, and I wasn't disappointed. THE CITY OF BRASS has some of the best fantasy world building I've ever read, along with compelling characters, an intriguing mystery, a dash of swoon-worthy romance, and roots in cultures that don't normally take center stage in fantasy. I mean, seriously, when was the last time you read a fantasy set in Egypt in the 19th century? On top of all this, the characters in THE CITY OF BRASS are some of the most complex and nuanced I've ever read. The book was constantly challenging my evaluations of specific characters, and keeping me guessing. If you are a fan of either adult or young adult fantasy (this one is adult, but I think has strong crossover appeal), I highly recommend THE CITY OF BRASS!!!

The City of Brass was a book I recognized from the cover but hadn't heard many people talking about it. And then all of a sudden in the past month I was seeing it everywhere and it was getting rave reviews. So I decided it was time to request it from the library. And I'm happy I did!The main characters are all written so well. I felt like Ii easily knew them and I couldn't help but love Nahri, Dara, and even Ali by the end. Nahri is such a badass character. When we first meet her she's living in Cairo, Egypt stealing and conning people to survive. We learn she has this magical healing power but she doesn't know where it came from or even where she comes from. I think her motives and her character arc are realistic and I easily rooted for her the entire way through the story. I do not typically have fictional literary crushes, but Dara is definitely an exception. I enjoyed his individual plot when it came to his past and his own character arc but also him and Nahri had amazing chemistry. They stole the show every time they had a scene together. I liked their friendship and I really loved their romance. I would have loved to see more. The one main character I wasn't a huge fan of at first was Ali. He kind of drove me insane but by the end of the story he did warm up to me a bit more. I am not sure how I completely feel about him but he doesn't annoy me as much anymore either.I love that on the cover and in the story it is shown/described that Nahri wears a head wrap (and even there's a part where she wears one that covers everything but her eyes) because there isn't many fantasy or even contemporary stories, at least in YA where that kind of representation is front and center in the story. I am so happy for any readers who will see themselves on the cover or even in Nahri herself. She's an amazing character to relate to because of her strength and determination. Representation matters and I think this is a great example of that. The plot was an incredibly rich and it was thick with these beautiful Middle Eastern settings. I have not read a lot of fantasy (or really, any genre) set in the Middle East so this whole atmosphere is very new to me. The added on Middle Eastern mythology, food, clothing, and culture made the reading experience come alive way more than a lot of fantasy novels I've read, especially the first in a series. I loved learning about this world and it's one of the best fantasy worlds I've read in a very long time. However, the pacing for this book did have me feeling a bit nervous I was entering in a reading slump territory. It took me longer than it typically would for me to really get hooked into the story and I found myself having to put my phone across the room so I wouldn't let myself get distracted at every new chapter. It wasn't until about 250 pages into the story where I actually felt hooked and needed to keep reading. I think taking your time reading the story may be the best way to read it because there are so many important details in the different djinn tribes and it could have been confusing if I tried speeding through the story. The writing, like I mentioned earlier, is so well done with the setting and fantastical world Nahri is thrown into. I also love a lot of the dialogue, especially between Nahri and Dara because of their playful banter and how comfortable they are with each other. Although I enjoyed a lot of the dialogue and I loved the world, I also felt a bit of a disconnect emotionally when it came to the characters. It was weird, because on one hand I liked them a lot and I thought they were well written, but there was something detaching myself from being emotionally invested as much as I normally would have been. I think it may be because I was so focused on the political intrigue, the different tribes of djinn, and even the history of the djinn and the characters. As I was reading I noticed the kindle e-book edition was only two dollars so I snagged it immediately. So I plan on re-reading it before the release of the second one and I am hoping now that I have read it once I can be more emotionally invested in the next read.Unfortunately, that plus the pacing is why I gave it four stars instead of the five I would have given it if I didn't have those issues.I highly recommend this book. I think it is a beautiful fantasy story and I am definitely reading the second book the moment it comes out because I need to know what is going to happen next. If you're a fan of the fantasy genre, worlds rich with culture and mythology, an amazing cast of characters, and some terrifying villains, I recommend picking up The City of Brass.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–This book addressed to evangelical Christian teens is written in a flippant, smart-aleck, "too cool for school" voice that undercuts the importance of the information it imparts. Lookadoo explains why oral sex is, indeed, sex, and explores a number of common myths, e.g., condoms prevent pregnancy and diseases. Generalizations are frequent–e.g., a teen father will abandon the pregnant girl. Some of the data is documented, but the author frequently cites his own interviews with teens. He portrays homosexuality as a matter of personal choice. "Then there is the 'I was born gay' argument. Well, poop on that," he writes, before getting tangled up in an oversimplified discussion of the role of genetics in both gays and convicts. As the book progresses, Lookadoo includes an increasing number of biblical references and offers a chapter counseling teens who have been sexually active and now want to become abstinent to turn to God. The book is laid out in punchy, bold graphics that are visually exciting but not particularly original. Fictionalized scenarios and dialogue appear frequently, both in the text and in sidebars. Eleanor Ayer's It's Okay to Say No: Choosing Sexual Abstinence (Rosen, 2000) presents a strong case for abstinence and includes none of the religious references that make Lookadoo's book particularly problematic for public-school collections.–Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The description, title, and cover are all misleading. This book conveys the idea that sex is evil and only married couples, woman and man, should have sex.I do not know why this author or anyone else believes this could be a useful book to teens experiencing current day reality, let alone anyone. It lacks valid statistics and helpful information about sex, and layers guilt onto those who have experienced normal feelings and ideas about sex.Do not buy it for yourself, but most importantly, do not give this to kids.

Excellent book for boys. Straight up plain talk. I bought this book and left it sitting in his room. He claims he isn't reading it but by the worn pages I can see he has!

This is an amazing book! I bought several copies and handed them out to my entire 12th grade Sunday School class. This book has great life-lessons that children who are graduating high school should know.

This is an awesome book to play a drinking game with, and a horrible book to educate anyone on sex.Every time the author Justin Lookadoo says something sexist or writes an incorrect fact, take a shot. I promise that by page 7 you will be absolutely wasted out of your mind. There are so many gems in this book, I really don't know where to begin. There's the quiz "Should You Have Sex?" which completely disregards if you love or trust the person. Apparently the only way you can win this quiz is if you answer "yes" to being married for 10,000 points where all the other questions in the quiz are worth 1 point. Then there's the amazing section "Are You Gay?" where Justin talks about "the gay doctors - you know the scientists who study homosexuality", then as predicted he compares a woman's virginity to a shiny car. As in - do you want to buy a shiny car? Or a banged-up used one?Anyway I digress. I give this book 5 stars because it not only provides great drinking games, but it can be used as kindling to start fires, or if you've run out of toilet paper.

This book is horrible, it spreads misinformation and inaccurate statistics. I'd like to think that misrepresenting facts is wrong, regardless of your ideology. For example, he says that the Department of Health and Human Services says that "THERE IS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO PROVE CONDOM PROTECTION AGAINST STDs." when in reality they say "Latex condoms significantly reduce your risk of getting most STDs, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), if you use them correctly every time." ([...]) This is dangerous, he's telling teenagers information that will discourage them from using life-saving protection. He's also lying about their effectiveness at preventing pregnancy, saying they have a 85% success rate each time they are used (assuming perfect use). In reality, they have a 98% success rate over a year in sexually active couples ([...]). Nothing in this book can be trusted.

My husband and I are youth sponsors at our church. My husband is also a high school teacher and I taught before becoming a stay at home mom. We consider ourselves "in the know" when it comes to what teens are talking about. This book is raw. It is real. It is written by a Christian with Christian perspectives. I recommend parents reading it. You'll be shocked by the content but realize it is nothing less than what your teens are constanly being bombarded with in the locker rooms, at school, in their teen magazines, and of course on TV. Only difference (and a big huge one that matters) is that this book explains everything in a Christian perspective and even has a chapter on getting right with God. Read it then have your teens read it. They'll get the Truth (God's truth) on the issues that most adults are too afraid to address.

Many of the figures quoted in this book about success rates of birth control and the like are in error. While abstaining from sex is the only fool-proof birth control method, giving teens incorrect information will make them doubt the usefulness of protection even if they do decide to have sex, creating a dangerous situation for all involved.

Amazon.com Review

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor (and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and related conditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these terms sound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions. Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss many of the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical and occupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting to living with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive. This is also the RSI book if youÂ’re looking for information on the psychological ramifications of RSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office.

From Publishers Weekly

In this highly instructive and readable guide to health in the age of computers, Pascarelli, professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University and Cornell Medical Center, and Quilter, a health writer, explore the causes, symptoms and treatments of varied injuries stemming from prolonged computer keyboard work. RSI (repetitive strain injury) is the authors' catchword for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tendinitis, epycondylitis (also called tennis elbow) and a slew of other potentially chronic conditions that render not just computer work but also driving, washing dishes, holding a phone and opening a book difficult, if not agonizing. The authors identify the factors contributing to RSI; emphasize preventive measures, such as upper-body exercises, stretches and the pacing of keyboard work; and insist that finding the right professional diagnosis and treatment is the basis for recovery. They also include names of RSI support groups, ergonomic catalogues and on-line newsgroups. Each chapter offers personal exercises and checklists along with countless anecdotes from commiserating RSI sufferers. If some readers find this work somewhat repetitive and alarmist--all too ready to proclaim RSI "the occupational epidemic of the '90s" and to attribute it to overly demanding office productivity standards--most will find it a consoling trove of practical advice. This gives you a pretty easy-to-understand explanation of common RSI issues and what you can do about them. Despite being rather old this still seems to be one of the go-to texts (surely demonstrating how little is known about RSI, still).I think the authors strike the right balance here -- they say, yes, your problem is serious and could lead to disability if not addressed, but they also give a calm explanation and show how all but the most far-gone cases can be addressed with time. It was incredibly empowering to read this after visiting a general practitioner, being told I had carpal tunnel (despite my symptoms not resembling carpal tunnel at all), and essentially being brushed off. This book encouraged me to get physical and occupational therapy which has done a lot to help me improve, but the book gave me important background knowledge to help me understand what was happening to me.

"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years.

My physical therapist recommended reading this book and I absolutely loved it! If you have them assig my physical therapist recommended reading this book and I absolutely loved it! If you have RSI, this book will help you a lot.

It helped me cope with my carpal tunnel syndrome, I am still dealing with it but there is hope with some Physical Therapy.

Comprehensive information about RSI for a lay-person.

This book is the single most useful collection of practical RSI information I've found. Highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out how to stop hurting themselves when they're working. I have bought four copies for friends.

Frustrating how it keeps recommending that you find a doctor, while acknowledging that doctors don't really know what to do with RSI.

extremely helpful!! you must buy ASAP if you have an RSI!!!!! regular doctors misdiagnose rsi's causing extra months/years of pain!!
